세종시가 7월 30일부터 정부세종청사를 순환하는 자율주행차 셔틀을 종촌동 주거단지와 연결하는 새 노선을 시범 운행한다.

이번 자율주행차 노선은 어진중학교를 출발해 종촌동 종합복지센터, 어진동 대형마트, 정부청사 간선급행버스체계(BRT) 정류장 등을 포함한 약 9개 정류장을 거쳐 총 4.9km 구간을 하루 11회 순환하게 된다. 

운행 시간은 평일 오후 12시 50분부터 오후 8시까지며, 매월 첫째 금요일은 제외된다.

세종시는 2023년부터 정부청사 순환 자율주행차를 운영해왔으나, 주간에만 운행되어 시민들의 접근성이 낮았던 문제를 개선하기 위해 이번 노선을 기획했다. 이를 위해 이응버스 수요 빅데이터를 분석해 BRT와 주거단지를 효과적으로 연결하는 방향으로 설계했다.

이번 사업은 국토교통부 ‘자율차 시범운행지구 서비스 지원사업’ 공모에 선정돼 국비 1억 5천만 원을 지원받았으며, 이에 따라 당초 계획보다 시범운행 기간을 2배 이상 연장해 올해 12월 말까지 서비스를 제공한다. 특히 시범운행 기간에는 시민들이 무상으로 이용할 수 있다.

이용자는 스마트폰 앱을 통해 호출할 필요 없이 일반 버스처럼 정류장에서 대기하다가 정차한 자율주행차에 탑승하면 된다. 각 정류장에는 안내판과 QR코드가 설치되어 있어 실시간 차량 위치와 예상 도착 시간을 확인할 수 있다. 

다만, 승객 안전을 위해 입석 탑승은 불가하며, 좌석 수는 총 12석이다.

세종시는 이번 시범운행을 통해 국내 최초의 광역형 자율주행버스 운행에 이어 주거단지까지 연계한 서비스를 선보임으로써 시민들이 자율주행 신기술을 일상생활에서 쉽고 안전하게 체험할 수 있도록 할 계획이다.

Sejong City will begin piloting a new route connecting the Sejong Government Complex Sejong with a residential complex in Jongchon-dong, starting July 30th.
