세종특별자치시교육청이 전국 시·도교육청 가운데 최초로 중증장애인 선수들로 구성된 ‘보치아’ 스포츠단을 창단하며 장애인 체육 역사의 새로운 이정표를 세웠다.

세종시교육청 2월 23일 세종시장애인체육회에서 중증장애인 스포츠단 창단식을 개최하고 선수단의 공식 출범을 선포했다. 

이번 창단은 교육 자치단체가 주도하여 중증장애인을 위한 공적 스포츠 기반을 마련했다는 점에서 혁신적인 사례로 평가받고 있다. 

그동안 신체적 제약으로 인해 상대적으로 체육 활동 기회가 부족했던 중증장애인들이 전문 선수로서 안정적인 환경에서 훈련하며 사회에 참여할 수 있는 지속 가능한 토대를 구축하게 된 것.

스포츠단이 주력으로 삼은 ‘보치아(Boccia)’는 뇌성마비 등 중증장애를 가진 선수들이 참여하는 대표적인 패럴림픽 종목으로, 표적구에 공을 가까이 던져 승부를 가리는 방식으로 진행되며, 고도의 집중력과 정교한 전략이 요구되어 ‘장애인 스포츠의 꽃’이라 불리기도 한다.

구연희 교육감 권한대행은 이번 창단이 단순한 팀 구성을 넘어 장애인 스포츠 저변 확대와 사회적 인식 개선의 중요한 전환점이 될 것임을 강조했다. 

이를 위해 교육청은 세종시장애인체육회와 긴밀한 협력 체계를 구축하고, 선수들이 훈련에만 매진할 수 있도록 체계적인 운영 지원과 전문적인 훈련 환경 조성을 약속했다.

이날 선수들이 직접 선보인 보치아 경기는 참석자들에게 깊은 울림을 전달하며 장애를 넘어선 도전의 가치를 다시금 일깨웠다.
