충남 홍성군이 스마트농업 육성지구 조성에 속도를 내고 있다. 농림축산식품부 송미령 장관은 지난 12일 홍성군을 방문해 군의 스마트농업 기본계획을 청취하고, 청년농업인들과 간담회를 가졌다.

이날 송 장관은 서부면 광리에 위치한 토마토 전문 생산기업 ‘옥토팜’을 찾아 스마트농업 기술이 적용된 시설을 둘러봤다. 이어 ‘스마트농업 확산 및 청년농업인 지원 강화’를 주제로 현장 간담회를 열고, 정책 방향과 지원 방안에 대한 의견을 나눴다.

간담회에는 송 장관과 이용록 홍성군수를 비롯해 한국농업기술진흥원, 한국농어촌공사, 청년농업인, 민간기업 관계자 등 60여 명이 참석했다. 참석자들은 임대형 스마트팜 확대 ,농업 분야 온실가스 감축 지원 ,스마트농업 기반 시설 확충 등을 논의하며, 정부와 지자체의 협력 방안을 모색했다.

홍성군은 지난해 ‘스마트농업 육성 및 지원에 관한 법률’에 따라 전국 4개소 중 중부권에서 유일하게 스마트농업 육성지구로 선정됐다. 이에 따라 군은 서부면 광리 일대 8.2ha 부지에 프리미엄 임대형 스마트팜 생산단지를 우선 조성하고, 이후 갈산면 동산리 지역에 신품종 개발 및 물류·유통 기능을 갖춘 복합단지를 단계적으로 구축할 계획이다.

송미령 장관은 “스마트농업은 청년농업인의 안정적인 영농 정착과 미래 농업의 경쟁력을 높이는 핵심 요소”라며 “청년들이 농업에서 꿈을 펼칠 수 있도록 정부가 적극 지원하겠다”고 밝혔다.

홍성군은 기본설계를 마무리하는 대로 본격적인 조성 사업에 착수할 예정이며, 지역 특성에 맞춘 스마트농업 모델을 구축해 지속 가능한 농업 생태계를 조성할 방침이다.
