대한민국의 국가유산이 뉴욕의 한복판에서 세계인과 만났다.

국가유산청과 국가유산진흥원, 그리고 뉴욕한국문화원(원장 김천수)은 현지시간으로 2월 11일, 미국 뉴욕 타임스스퀘어와 문화원 일대에서 ‘코리아 온 스테이지 인 뉴욕(Korea on Stage in New York)’ 개막 행사를 열고 본격적인 ‘국가유산 방문 캠페인’ 홍보에 나섰다.

‘Golden Blessings: Discovering Korean Cultural Heritage(빛의 축원: 찬란히 빛나는 한국의 유산들)’을 주제로 마련된 이번 행사는 한국의 전통과 현대 예술이 어우러진 미디어아트, 공연, 체험 프로그램 등 다채로운 콘텐츠로 구성됐다. 

세계인의 이목이 집중되는 타임스스퀘어 전광판에는 9일부터 한국의 궁중무용, 전통공예, 건축미를 담은 국가유산 홍보영상이 송출돼 ‘K-헤리티지’로 물든 뉴욕의 밤을 밝혔다.

11일 오후 타임스스퀘어 광장에서는 한국전통무용단 ‘춤누리(KTDOC)’와 국가유산진흥원 예술단이 합동으로 공연 ‘Wishes in Motion Times Square’를 선보였다. 

모듬북과 진도북춤 등 역동적인 전통 무용이 약 30분간 펼쳐지자, 현장을 찾은 시민과 관광객들은 한겨울 추위를 잊은 채 환호로 화답했다. 행사장에서 배포한 갓 형태의 홍보품은 순식간에 동이 나며 인기를 실감케 했다.

이날 저녁 뉴욕한국문화원에서는 개막 리셉션이 열렸다. 허민 국가유산청장과 이귀영 진흥원장, 차지훈 주유엔대한민국대표부 대사, 이상호 주뉴욕총영사 대리 등 250여 명이 참석해 자리를 빛냈다. 

허 청장은 글로벌 K-팝 아티스트 케빈 우에게 ‘국가유산 방문자 여권’을 전달하며 한국 방문과 체험을 제안했다. 이는 세계 각국인들이 한국의 문화유산을 직접 경험하도록 이끄는 상징적 초청 의미를 담고 있다.

허 청장은 “세계 문화의 중심지 뉴욕에서 우리의 유산을 소개할 수 있어 감회가 깊다”며 “K-컬처의 근간이자 영감의 원천인 국가유산의 의미를 세계에 확산하겠다”고 밝혔다.

행사 기간 동안 전통공연뿐 아니라 사찰음식 명장 정관 스님이 진행하는 ‘사찰음식 클래스’ 등 체험 프로그램이 이어지고 있다. 사전 예약은 이미 1,700명이 넘는 신청자가 몰릴 정도로 높은 관심을 얻었다. 

참가자들은 코스별 체험을 통해 ‘국가유산 방문자 여권’에 도장을 받고 색동·갓 키링 등 한정판 굿즈를 기념품으로 받으며 한국 문화유산을 직접 체험했다.

국가유산청 관계자는 “이번 뉴욕 무대를 계기로 한국의 국가유산이 세계 무대에서 문화 브랜드로 자리매김할 것으로 기대한다”며 “앞으로도 국가유산과 K-컬처가 함께 성장하는 국제 교류 사업을 지속 강화할 방침”이라고 전했다.

Beginning on the 9th, Times Square's electronic billboards, a focal point for global attention, broadcast promotional videos showcasing Korea's royal court dance, traditional crafts, and architectural beauty, brightening the New York night with "K-Heritage."

On the afternoon of the 11th, the Korean Traditional Dance Company "Chumnuri (KTDOC)" and the National Heritage Promotion Agency's Art Troupe presented a joint performance, "Wishes in Motion Times Square," in Times Square.

As dynamic traditional dances, including the Modumbuk and Jindobukchum, were performed for approximately 30 minutes, the audience, citizens and tourists alike, forgot the midwinter cold and responded with cheers. The promotional hats distributed at the event sold out quickly, demonstrating the event's popularity.

That evening, the Korean Cultural Center New York held an opening reception. Approximately 250 guests, including National Heritage Administration Director Heo Min, National Heritage Promotion Agency Director Lee Gwi-young, Ambassador Cha Ji-hoon, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations, and Acting Consul General Lee Sang-ho, attended the event.

Director Heo presented a "National Heritage Visitor Passport" to global K-pop artist Kevin Wu, offering him a chance to visit and experience Korea. This was a symbolic invitation for people from around the world to experience Korea's cultural heritage firsthand.

Director Heo stated, "I am deeply moved to be able to introduce our heritage in New York, the center of global culture. I will share the meaning of our national heritage, the foundation and source of inspiration for K-culture, with the world."

During the event, traditional performances and hands-on programs, including a "Temple Food Class" led by Buddhist monk Jeonggwan, a renowned temple food expert, were held. Pre-registration has already attracted over 1,700 applicants, demonstrating high interest.

Participants received stamps on their "National Heritage Visitor Passport" through each course, received limited-edition souvenirs like Saekdong and Gat keychains, and directly experienced Korean cultural heritage.

An official from the National Heritage Administration stated, "We expect this New York event to serve as a catalyst for Korea's national heritage to establish itself as a cultural brand on the global stage. We plan to continue strengthening international exchange programs that foster the synergy between national heritage and K-culture."
