과학기술정보통신부(이하 ‘과기정통부’)는 16일 오후 2시 대전 한국핵융합에너지연구원 컨퍼런스룸에서 「핵융합 혁신연합(Fusion Innovation Alliance)」 출범식을 개최했다고 밝혔다.

이번 출범식에는 과기정통부 장관을 비롯해 출연(연) 원장, 대기업 및 중소기업, 스타트업 관계자, 대학 연구자 등 산학연 관계자 100여명이 참석하여 핵융합 산업의 발전을 위한 협력의 장을 마련했다.

‘핵융합 혁신연합’은 핵융합에너지 조기 실현을 위한 기반 구축과 국내 핵융합 산업 생태계 활성화를 목표로 하는 산·학·연 협의체로, 지난 7월 발표된 '핵융합에너지 실현 가속화 전략'의 후속 조치로 설립되었다. 

민간 성장 기반을 마련하고 핵융합 산업화를 촉진하기 위한 민간 자율 기구로서의 역할을 수행하게 된다.

이 연합은 국내 산·학·연의 소통을 활성화하고 협력을 확대하여 핵융합 산업 생태계를 조기에 구축하는 것을 목표로 하고 있으며, 이를 통해 국내 핵융합 산업의 체계적인 발전과 글로벌 기술 경쟁력 강화를 추진할 계획이다.

‘핵융합 혁신연합’은 소병식 삼성물산 부사장을 상임위원장으로 한 상임위원회와 워킹그룹, 그리고 기업 및 대학, 출연연 등 91개 기관 소속 전문가 총 206명이 가입을 완료하였다. 한국핵융합에너지연구원(핵융합정책센터)은 혁신연합 운영의 활성화를 지원할 예정이다.

주요 역할로는 핵융합 정책 및 전략에 대한 민·관 협력 강화, 기술 개발 및 규제, 인력 양성 방안 등 핵심 현안에 대한 정책 방향 제언이 포함된다. 또한, 국내 핵융합 스타트업 육성과 해외시장 진출 지원을 통해 핵융합 산업 전반의 활성화를 도모할 계획이다.

과기정통부는 ‘핵융합 혁신연합’과의 긴밀한 협력을 통해 민·관 협력 기반의 핵융합 혁신 기술 개발과 체계적인 산업화 준비를 통해 핵융합에너지를 조기 실현하는 기반을 구축해 나가겠다고 밝혔다.

출범식에 참석한 유상임 장관은 축사에서 “핵융합에너지는 미래 에너지 부족 문제 해결을 위한 핵심 기술로, 이를 조기 실현하기 위해서는 민·관의 협력을 통한 건강한 산업 생태계 구축과 기술의 상용화가 필수적”이라고 강조하며, “국가 발전을 이끌어 온 주역인 산·학·연의 역량이 핵융합 실현을 위해 결집될 수 있도록 힘을 모아주길 바란다”고 당부했다.
