맹수석 대전시교육감 예비후보가 23일 민주진보진영 교육감 후보 단일화 추진 과정의 절차적 문제를 지적하며, 현재의 단일화 절차를 잠정 중단할 것을 공식 요구했다.

맹 예비후보는 이날 발표한 입장문에서 “민주진보진영의 단일화 필요성에 공감하고 그 과정에 적극 참여해왔지만, 지금의 논의는 행정통합 현실화 국면에 맞지 않다”며 “대전만의 단일화 추진은 시기적으로나 내용적으로 중부권 통합특별법의 취지에 어긋날 수 있다”고 밝혔다.

그는 “대전·충남 행정통합이 가시권에 들어온 상황에서, 통합특별시가 출범될 경우 교육감 선출 역시 통합 차원에서 논의되어야 한다”며 “통합특별법 제정 이후의 단일화 논의가 민주적 절차와 정책적 일관성에 부합한다”고 강조했다.

또한 맹 예비후보는 ‘시민회의’가 추진 중인 단일화 절차의 투명성 문제도 언급했다. 

그는 “단일화 관련 논의가 후보자들에게 충분히 공유되지 않아 알 권리가 보장되지 않았다”며 “특히 서약서 제3항은 시민회의가 일방적으로 정한 일정과 방식을 따르도록 하는 내용으로, 절차의 공정성을 해칠 소지가 있다”고 지적했다.

맹수석 예비후보는 끝으로 “민주진보진영의 단일화는 여전히 필요하다. 다만, 이는 통합특별법이 제정된 이후 통합교육감 선출을 염두에 두고 진행돼야 한다”며 “시민회의는 현 단일화 절차를 잠정 중단하고, 새로운 논의를 준비하길 정식으로 요청한다”고 밝혔다.
