대전시는 2월 19일 KAIST 문지캠퍼스에서 ‘KAIST 혁신 디지털 의과학원’ 착공식을 개최하며 대전 바이오혁신 생태계 조성에 본격 나섰다. 

이날 행사에는 이장우 대전시장, 이광형 KAIST 총장, 조원휘 대전시의회 의장, 황정하 국회의원 등 주요 인사와 학생 등 120여 명이 자리를 함께했다.

이번 혁신 디지털 의과학원 건립은 총 422억 원 이상의 사업비가 투입되며, 2027년 하반기 준공을 목표로 한다. 지하 1층, 지상 6층, 연면적 9,730㎡ 규모로 조성되는 이 연구원은 디지털 기반 바이오 신약 연구개발, AI 정밀의료, 첨단 의료기술과 바이오 장비 연구 등을 아우르는 핵심 거점이 될 예정이다.

특히 의과학, 생명과학, 공학, 인공지능(AI)을 융합해 차세대 연구 인재를 양성하는 한편, 임상 연구 성과를 지역 바이오 벤처 창업과 기술사업화로 연결시키는 실질적 바이오 혁신 생태계 구축에 힘쓰게 된다. 

지난해 준공된 첨단의과학원 동물실험동과도 긴밀히 협력해 기초연구부터 전임상과 응용연구까지 연구 전 주기에 시너지 효과를 기대할 수 있다.

이장우 대전시장은 “혁신 디지털 의과학원은 연구·교육·창업을 잇는 선순환 구조의 핵심 인프라”라며 “대전 바이오산업의 질적 도약과 지역경제 활성화에 큰 힘이 될 것”이라고 포부를 밝혔다.

이번 사업은 대전을 대한민국 바이오헬스 혁신의 중심으로 도약시키는 데 중요한 발판이 될 것으로 기대받고 있다. 앞으로도 대전시는 첨단 연구 인프라 지원과 인재 육성에 더욱 박차를 가해 혁신 생태계를 지속적으로 강화할 예정이다.
