더불어민주당 소속 장종태 국회의원(대전 서갑)은 29일 대전시의회 기자실을 찾아 내년 지방선거에서 대전시장 출마 의사를 확고히 밝혔다. 

그는 “당의 결정과 절차에 따르겠지만, 출마 기회가 주어진다면 대전시민을 위해 마지막 봉사를 하고 싶다”고 말했다.

장 의원은 2022년 지방선거 당시 구청장직을 내려놓고 대전시장 도전에 나섰던 경험을 언급하며, “그 마음가짐은 지금도 변함없다. 언제든 대전시민을 위한 일에 나설 준비가 되어 있다”고 강조했다.

그는 정당의 공천 절차에 대해 “정당은 당원이 주인인 조직이라 내 의지로만 결정할 수 없다”며, “최종 선택권은 당원과 시민이 갖고 있다”고 밝히면서도 경선 룰 등을 존중하겠다는 뜻을 내비쳤다.

특히 장 의원은 “대전이 인구 30만의 소도시에서 150만 대도시로 성장하는 과정을 몸소 겪어왔다”며 “이 같은 경험이 나의 가장 큰 자산이며, 대전과 시민을 위한 마지막 봉사의 마음으로 임할 것”이라고 말했다.

한편, 대전시장 민주당 후보군은 허태정 전 시장, 장철민 국회의원, 박범계·박용갑 국회의원, 장종태 의원, 김재선 중구청장, 권선택 전 대전시장 등 여러 인사들이 거론되면서 추석 명절을 기점으로 물밑 경쟁이 치열해지고 있다.
