충남도가 이차전지 산업을 미래의 핵심 성장 동력으로 육성하기 위한 계획을 발표했다. 

24일, 서산에 위치한 리튬전지 생산업체 비츠로셀에서 열린 제4차 경제상황 현장 점검회의에서 김태흠 지사는 이차전지 산업의 중요성을 강조하며, 지역 산업과 기업의 특성에 맞춘 ‘배터리 삼각축’ 구축을 위한 전략을 소개했다.

충남도는 서산과 당진을 중심으로 도심항공교통(UAM) 관련 차세대 배터리 연구 개발 거점으로 삼고, 2030년까지 250억 원을 투자해 차세대 배터리 연구센터와 리튬 금속 박막 제조 공정 장비를 구축할 계획이다. 

또한, 천안과 아산 지역에서는 전기차 중심의 지능형 배터리 산업 클러스터를 조성하고, 화재 안전 대응 배터리 통합 시스템(BIMS) 평가 지원센터를 설립할 예정이다.

보령, 홍성, 부여 지역은 친환경 배터리 재사용 및 자원 순환 중심지로 발전시키기 위해 2030년까지 400억 원을 투입하여 리튬·인산·철(LFP) 배터리 전주기 플랫폼과 사용 후 배터리 재사용 산업화를 위한 지원센터를 구축할 계획이다.

김태흠 지사는 “이차전지는 충남의 미래 전략 산업”이라며, “배터리 삼각거점을 통해 충남 이차전지 산업의 새로운 도약을 이끌겠다”고 밝혔다. 

그는 또한 정부 공모 사업을 적극적으로 확보하고, 도 자체 지원책을 마련할 것이라고 덧붙였다.

충남경제진흥원에 따르면, 2023년 기준 충남의 이차전지 관련 사업체 수는 316개, 종사자는 1만 1152명으로, 이는 전국에서 세 번째로 큰 규모다. 

이 지역에는 셀 제조 및 소재·부품·장비 업체와 연구기관, 대학 등이 밀집해 있어 산업 생태계의 구축과 성장 가능성이 높게 평가되고 있다.

충남의 이차전지 산업 수출액은 18억 3000만 달러로, 전국의 7.2%를 차지하며, 이 중 22.3%는 미국으로 수출되고 있다. 반면, 수입액은 8억 달러로, 전국의 4.4% 수준이며, 이 가운데 36.5%는 중국에서 수입되고 있다.

경제동향분석센터는 “글로벌 불확실성에도 불구하고 이차전지 활용 분야는 전기차 배터리뿐만 아니라 ESS, UAM, 드론 등으로 확대되며 지속적인 성장이 예상된다”면서, 전략적인 지원 방안 모색의 필요성을 강조했다.

On the 24th, at the 4th Economic Situation On-site Inspection Meeting held at the lithium battery manufacturer Bitsrocell in Seosan, Governor Kim Tae-heum emphasized the importance of the secondary battery industry and introduced a strategy for establishing a ‘battery triangle’ tailored to the characteristics of regional industries and companies.

Chungnam Province plans to use Seosan and Dangjin as bases for next-generation battery research and development related to urban air traffic (UAM), and invest 25 billion won by 2030 to build a next-generation battery research center and lithium metal thin film manufacturing process equipment.

In addition, an intelligent battery industry cluster centered on electric vehicles will be created in the Cheonan and Asan regions, and a fire safety response battery integrated system (BIMS) evaluation support center will be established.

Boryeong, Hongseong, and Buyeo regions plan to invest 40 billion won by 2030 to develop them into eco-friendly battery reuse and resource circulation centers, establishing a lithium-phosphate-iron (LFP) battery full-cycle platform and a support center for the industrialization of used battery reuse.

Governor Kim Tae-heum said, “Secondary batteries are Chungnam’s future strategic industry,” and “We will lead a new leap forward for the Chungnam secondary battery industry through the battery triangle.”

He also added that he will actively secure government-sponsored projects and prepare provincial support measures.

According to the Chungnam Economic Promotion Agency, as of 2023, Chungnam has 316 secondary battery-related businesses and 11,152 employees, the third largest in the country.

The region is densely populated with cell manufacturing and materials/components/equipment companies, research institutes, and universities, so the potential for establishing and growing an industrial ecosystem is highly evaluated.

Chungnam's secondary battery industry exports amount to $1.83 billion, accounting for 7.2% of the nation's total, and 22.3% of this is exported to the United States. On the other hand, imports amount to $800 million, accounting for 4.4% of the nation's total, and 36.5% of this is imported from China.

The Economic Trends Analysis Center emphasized the need to find strategic support measures, saying, "Despite global uncertainty, the secondary battery utilization field is expected to continue to grow, expanding to not only electric vehicle batteries but also ESS, UAM, and drones."
