[Former Seo-gu mayor Jang Jong-tae “Cannot demolish Hanbat Stadium without alternatives”]

Former Daejeon Seo-gu mayor Jang Jong-tae expressed concern over the promotion of the Daejeon Baseball Dream Park project, a promise of the 7th popularly elected Daejeon Mayor Heo Tae-jung.

This is because Daejeon City announced that the Hanbat Sports Complex would be demolished in March to create the Baseball Dream Park without a comprehensive plan and countermeasures. Against this backdrop, opposition from players and sports clubs has continued.

Former Commissioner Jang Jong-tae pointed out on the 20th, "I am concerned about the Baseball Dream Park project that is being promoted without comprehensive measures.

‘Daejeon Baseball Dream Park’ is a project to build a baseball stadium with a capacity of 20,000 seats by 2025 by investing KRW 147.6 billion on the site of the current Hanbat Sports Complex (Daejong-ro, Jung-gu, Daejeon).

To this end, the city of Daejeon plans to demolish Hanbat Stadium, the only general stadium in Daejeon, in March and build a new baseball field, Baseball Dream Park, in its place. In addition, as a sports complex to replace Hanbat, the ‘Southwest Sports Town’ is planned to be built in Hakha-dong, Yuseong-gu, by 2029.

In response, former Commissioner Jang pointed out that "the city of Daejeon did not comprehensively review and prepare countermeasures for the various concerns that have been raised since 2019 when the Hanbat Stadium is demolished."

He continued, “It is disappointing that Daejeon City came up with a temporary alternative to ‘creating the Chungnam National University and Daejeon University sports spaces as alternative training spaces for players’ only a few months before the demolition of the Hanbat Stadium. It proves that the 'Park Creation' is being promoted without comprehensive review and countermeasures.”

In addition, he said, “The project promotion is unclear, as the ‘Southwest Sports Town’ proposed by the city of Daejeon as an alternative to the Hanbat Stadium has also been notified of a re-examination at the central investment review. The status of Daejeon's athletics is inevitably lowered, such as not being able to host the tournament," he said.
Athletes, student athletes, sports enthusiasts, and nearby residents who have used the site as a training ground are also protesting against Daejeon City's policy of demolition of the Hanbat Stadium without an alternative.

This is because players could not train stably for more than 7 years until the Daejeon Stadium was built, and club members and nearby residents also lost valuable sports space.

In response, banners were posted around Hanbat Stadium with the words “opposition to the removal of the Hanbat Sports Complex without an alternative” and “there is no metropolitan city without a sports complex.”

Former Seo-gu mayor Jang Jong-tae pointed out, “The first priority is to collect opinions from players, athletes, and nearby residents who train there to demolish Hanbat Stadium for the creation of the Baseball Dream Park.

"The city of Daejeon should re-diagnose the 'Baseball Dream Park', a promise of Mayor Heo Tae-jung of the 7th popular election, and come up with comprehensive measures."
