[Gyeryong-si opens the ‘Gyeryongsan Security Ecological Trail’]

Gyeryong-si announced that the 2.5km-long and 1.5m-wide section from Yongdong Reservoir Dulle-gil to Samsindang via Amyongchu and Gyeryongsan National Park was opened in accordance with the notice of the Ministry of Environment to change the park plan of Gyeryongsan National Park.

Gyeryongsan, one of the most famous mountains in Korea, has a total of 21 trails, but access to the southern area of Gyeryongsan, located in Gyeryong-si, has been controlled by the Military Facilities Protection Area Act and the Nature Conservation Act.

In the meantime, during the 'Gyeryong Military Culture Festival', the representative festival of Gyeryong City, which won the Korea Festival Contents Grand Prize for 4 consecutive years, the security climbing program was conducted for about 100 climbers a day to the vicinity of Cheonhwangbong Peak, which received a great response. During the period, access was restricted, and complaints were constantly being made to request that even some sections be open at all times.

Accordingly, the city has been promoting continuous consultations with related organizations such as Gyeryong University, the Ministry of Environment, and the National Park Service Headquarters to open the Gyeryongsan Ecological Road so that citizens can see and feel the beautiful natural environment of Mt. Gyeryong in all seasons.

To this end, we commissioned a specialized company to conduct a service to study the 'impact of the opening of trails on the natural environment of Gyeryongsan', and submitted the 'Gyeryongsan National Park Park Plan Change and Trail Site Adequacy Assessment' to the Ministry of Environment, etc. Various efforts have been made to create a security ecology trail.

Thanks to the continuous request from the city, the Ministry of Environment and the National Park Service Headquarters formed a related T/F team to conduct on-site investigation and evaluation of 18 items in 4 areas including ▴Nature conservation ▴Usage and convenience ▴Visit safety ▴Ease of management. As a result, it scored 83 points, much higher than the 70 points, which is the standard score for selecting a trail.

Based on the results of this evaluation, the Ministry of Environment announced the Gyeryong Security Ecological Trail as the 22nd trail of Gyeryongsan National Park through consultation with central administrative agencies such as the Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Public Administration and Security, and the Korea Forest Service and deliberation of trail feasibility study. In line with this, through continuous consultations with Gyeryong University and the National Park Service Headquarters, we plan to create the best security ecology trail in Korea that harmonizes security assets, cultural assets, and natural environment in connection with the Gyeryong Barracks Experience Center, which will be completed in 2022.

In the future, the city plans to open the trail once a day only to those who make a reservation in advance by preparing detailed operation plans and countermeasures.

If the trail is created and activated in the future, various effects are expected, such as creation of tourism resources linked with security and cultural properties, publicity and image enhancement of Gyeryong, the national defense capital, revitalization of the local economy, and job creation.
