On the 21st, Daejeon City held the inauguration ceremony of the “K-Bio Lab Central Promotion Council” in attendance at the main auditorium of the City Hall, attended by 40 local innovation agencies, and started a full battle to attract them.

According to the city of Daejeon, which has taken a full-fledged step toward the successful establishment of K-Bio Lab Central, a bio-foundation support organization,'K-Bio Lab Central' benchmarks the Boston Lab Central in the US with a project cost of 200 billion won. As a project to foster ventures and start-ups in the bio field by providing networking, etc., the Ministry of Small and Medium Venture Businesses will hold a contest for selection of candidate sites in the next month, and Daejeon City will also participate.

The'Promotion Council' includes local bio companies, government-funded research institutes such as the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Technology and the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology, regional universities such as KAIST, Chungnam National University, and Hannam University, general hospitals such as Chungnam National University Hospital, and leading accelerators in Korea. Investment parties (VC, AC), financial institutions, etc. participate, and local lawmakers and city councils are contributing.

Daejeon City Vice Mayor Kim Myung-soo announced the'Daejeon Bio Industry Innovation Growth Master Plan', and said, “The Daedeok R&D Special Zone is the largest bio-source technology in Korea with 45 research institutes and 295 research institutes as a bio-cluster centered on R&D. It is the source of (Dip tech) and is a mecca of the bio industry where more than 600 bio companies based on technology are integrated.

Daejeon is a spin-off type that has accumulated research experience by having a rich pool of high-quality human resources and research base for convergence and complex research such as Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, and Nano Advanced Institute of Technology. It is evaluated as the best place for bio startups with many startups and success stories.

In fact, Daejeon achieved remarkable achievements in the field of biohealth last year, such as the transfer of overseas technology of 6.9 trillion won (67% nationwide) and the export of corona diagnostic kits of 216 billion won (a 30-fold increase from the previous year). Excluding the metropolitan area, this is the highest performance in the country.

The growth of investment is also a hot region, with a total of 22 venture capital firms, which ranks third in the nation after Seoul and Gyeonggi, and Daejeon has the highest number of venture firms per 10,000 population at 17.45 in the nation.

Heo Tae-jeong, mayor of Daejeon, said, “If Lab Central is established in the Daedeok Special Zone, a bio-belt that encompasses Daejeon-Sejong-Osong will be built and become the center of innovative growth in Korea.” We will make sure to attract Lab Central to make it a bio-venture hub city.”
