[Chungnam Provincial Council Geumgang Special Committee discusses ways to restore the natural nature of the Geum River Estuary]

To restore the natural nature of the Geum River Estuary, a forum for public debate was held in which citizens, experts, and related organizations from all walks of life participated.

Chungnam Provincial Council “Special Committee for Eco-friendly Development in Geumgang Area” (Chairman Yang Geum-bong) held a large debate on ecological restoration of the Geumgang Estuary at the Seocheon Arts Center on the 12th.

This debate was set up under the subtitle of “Restoration of brackish water through empirical experiments to restore the natural nature of the Geum River Estuary,” to explore ways to create a balanced Geum Estuary between ecology and water use, nature and people, and river and sea.

Seoul National University Emeritus Professor Kim Jeong-wook served as the chairperson, while Chungnam Research Institute Kim Young-il and Professor Ahn Soon-mo of Pusan National University, who participated in the Nakdong River Seawater Distribution Demonstration Experiment, participated as presenters.

Chungnam Provincial Assembly Rep. Kim Ki-seo (Buyeo 1, Debuyeo Democratic Party), Lee Dong-ik, Director of Seocheon Branch, Korea Rural Community Corporation, Senior Research Fellow Kim Bo-guk, Regional Development Research Department, Jeonbuk Research Institute, Senior Research Fellow Song Mi-young, Gyeonggi Research Institute, and Eok-Soo Kim, Steering Committee Chairman of the Geum River Estuary Ecological Restoration Committee, participated as debaters. .

Yang Geum-bong, Chairman of the Geumgang Special Committee (Seocheon 2, the Democratic Party of Deobuleo) said, “This debate is an important place for the restoration of the natural nature of the Geum River Estuary.” The city council will also do its best to restore and develop in a balance between nature and people.”

Chairman Kim Myung-seon said, “To revive the ecological environment of the collapsing Geum River and West Sea, various measures such as expansion of drainage locks and distribution of seawater are urgently needed to revive the ecological environment of the collapsing Geum River and West Sea, and to secure replacement water for the Geum River Hagutduk. We hope to save the Geum River estuary and coastal tidal flats, which have become sick amid logic and indifference, so that the citizens and our descendants will live in a clean environment.”

Governor Yang Seung-jo said in a congratulatory remark, “It would not be an exaggeration to say that Chungnam has blossomed a rich agricultural culture from the Geum River and has produced the fruits of urban development and modern and contemporary cultural arts.” “How to pass the Geum River from the past to future generations? It is a time when deep thoughts are urgent.”

Kim Young-il, a former research fellow, explained in the presentation on the topic of a sustainable Geumgang estuary restoration plan through seawater circulation. “It is the time when it is necessary to carry out a demonstration experiment on the opening of the Geumgang estuary based on the results of the Geumganghagutduk seawater distribution research result.” It is important to reach the point of discussion through composition.”

Prof. Ahn Soon-mo cited the experimental results, ecological change and overseas cases as an example, and said, "Based on the possibility of ecological restoration, we will actively cooperate so that the Geum River Estuary seawater distribution demonstration experiment can proceed in a positive direction.

The debaters agreed that an agreement should be reached through the formation of an organic consultative body between stakeholders, such as local governments and residents, and related organizations.

Director Lee Dong-ik said, “When restoring brackish water for natural recovery, we need to review the stable supply plan for agricultural water and industrial water for industrial use in the national industrial complex, and inundation damage in lowlands, etc.,” he said. “It is necessary to collect opinions from local governments such as Chungnam and Jeonbuk, residents, and environmental groups.” Insisted.

Senior Research Fellow Kim Bo-guk said, “For the assessment of social, economic, and environmental impacts, an agreement (draft) that members closely related to the Geum River estuary, such as central and local governments, related organizations, and farmers, can agree and plan a project based on this. · We must promote it,” he stressed.

Senior Research Fellow Song Mi-young said, “The core of various discussions is consensus and mutual solidarity between stakeholders.” “We need to broaden the range of understanding between the upstream and downstream of water use and go one step further to discuss alternatives that can be considered together.” did.

Rep. Kim Ki-seo said, "The Saemangeumho seawater distribution will have a direct impact on the Geumgang estuary seawater distribution." I do” he emphasized.

"There are voices of concern over the supply of agricultural and public water during seawater distribution, but as suggested by former researcher Kim Young-il, we will be able to find sufficient alternatives such as moving 1 intake and 3 pumping stations within 10km, or linked operation." said.
