박승규의 도시, 문화로 날자 (1화) 쓰레기통에 담긴 철학

우리가 ‘쓰레기’라고 부르는 그것들은 무엇인가? 바로 어제까지 아니면 방금까지 내 몸을 시원하게 해주거나, 나를 따뜻하게 해주거나 아니면 나를 편리하게 해주던 것들의 목록이다. 그것들이 모여 있는 사물이 바로 쓰레기통이다. 

거리의 쓰레기통은 환경은 물론 쾌적한 도시미관에도 크게 영향을 미치는 공공시설이다. 하지만 결코 비중이 적지 않은 시설물임에도 불구하고 유지, 관리, 안전성의 이유로 거리 환경에서 사라졌다 나타나기를 반복하며 홀대를 받아왔다.

하지만 세계적으로 많은 예술가들의 쓰레기통이나 쓰레기봉투를 예술화하는 작업을 계속되고 있다. 어떤 쓰레기통은 예술품이 되기도 하고, 시민들의 쉼터가 되기도 한다. 또 철제 쓰레기 수거함은 화분이자 공공벤치로 다시 태어났다. 거리 쓰레기통은 에너지를 절약하는 수단이자 유기동물의 휴식처로도 활용된다. 최근에는 공공디자인의 중요성이 인식되면서 외형적 디자인과 재질 그리고 여러 가지의 기능이 개선되고 있다. 

거리를 걷다가 쌓인 쓰레기봉투 더미에도 인상을 찡그렸던 경험이 한번쯤은 있기 마련. 하지만 외국에는 절로 미소 짓게 만드는 일러스트가 그려진 쓰레기봉투도 있다.

에코디자인이란 환경을 배려하는 모두의 디자인이란 의미이다. 시민들과 함께 공유하고 소통할 수 있어야 하며, 작더라도 시민들 누구나 누릴 수 있도록 설계되어야 한다. 최근 공공디자인에도 친환경적 실험이 활발히 이루어지고 있다.

거리의 휴지통은 쓰레기를 효율적으로 수거하기 위한 사회적인 기능뿐만 아니라 거리 경관을 구성하는 가로시설물의 한 구성요소이다. 더럽고 냄새나는 것으로만 인식되던 거리의 쓰레기통은 지구를 위한 작은 실천을 할 수 있는 중요한 요소가 될 수도 있다. 쓰레기통과 쓰레기봉투의 업사이클링(up-cycling, 재활용품에 디자인 또는 활용도를 더해 그 가치를 높인 제품으로 재탄생시키는 것), 앞으로 많은 거리에서 볼 수 있기를 바란다.(글: 박승규 대전대학교 바이오헬스혁신융합대학사업단 교수)
