제9회 전국동시지방선거 본투표를 하루 앞둔 2일, 국민의힘 장동혁 대표가 충남 당진시를 전격 방문해 오성환 당진시장 후보를 향한 막판 표심 몰이에 화력을 쏟아부었다. 

집권 여당의 전폭적인 지지를 앞세워 대한민국 서해안 시대의 중심축인 당진의 멈춤 없는 발전을 이끌어갈 적임자가 오 후보임을 적극 부각하며 유권자들의 투표 참여를 독려하는 전략이다.

이날 오후 당진시 읍내동 당진구터미널 회전교차로에서 열린 총력 지원 유세 현장에는 오성환 후보를 비롯해 국민의힘 소속 도·시의원 출마자들과 수많은 지지자, 일반 시민들이 구름 떼처럼 몰려들어 선거 전날의 뜨거운 열기를 고스란히 증명했다.

단상에 오른 장 대표는 이번 선거가 지닌 막중한 무게감을 거듭 강조했다. 그는 내일 치러질 선거는 단순히 행정 책임자 한 명을 뽑는 데 그치지 않고, 당진의 거대한 미래를 어느 세력이 온전히 책임질 수 있는지를 가름하는 중대한 분수령이라며, 시민 여러분이 행사하는 한 표가 당진의 장기적인 발전 방향과 도시 경쟁력을 판가름하게 될 것이라고 목소리를 높였다.
