최민호 국민의힘 세종시장 후보 측이 상대 진영인 조상호 더불어민주당 후보를 향해 배우자의 국적 및 세금 탈루 의혹, 본인의 병역 면제 문제를 정조준하며 파상 공세를 퍼부었다.

최민호 후보의 '아리아리캠프' 최명주 대변인은 29일 성명서를 내고 "궁지에 몰린 조상호 캠프의 변명이 코웃음을 짓게 한다"며 "청문회였다면 시작과 동시에 짐을 싸 고향으로 돌아가야 할 일"이라고 강도 높게 비판했다.

최 대변인은 먼저 조 후보 배우자의 국적 문제를 물고 늘어졌다. 

조 후보 측이 '미국 시민권을 취득해 거주하던 중 후보를 만나 혼인했고, 작년부터 국적 회복 절차를 밟고 있다'고 해명한 것에 대한 반박이다. 

최 대변인은 "2017년부터 국내에 거주하며 결혼 생활을 해온 배우자가 수년간 미국 시민으로 살다가, 남편이 시장 선거에 나서자 선거를 불과 1년 앞두고 국적 회복에 나선 것 아니냐"며 합리적 의심을 제기했다. 

이어 "세종시민들을 향해 '눈 가리고 아웅'하는 쇼를 멈추라"고 쏘아붙였다.

배우자의 세금 탈루 의혹에 대해서는 더욱 날을 세웠다. 

최 대변인은 "조 후보가 언론을 통해 배우자가 2017년 한국에 왔다고 밝힌 만큼 한국 거주자가 된 것"이라며 "국내 거주자라면 소득이 세계 어디에서 발생하든 신고해야 하는데, 중앙선거관리위원회에 신고된 후보 배우자의 5년간 납세 실적은 '0원'이다"라고 지적했다. 그러면서 "선거 공보물 허위 기재가 아니라면 탈세나 탈루 의심을 지울 수 없다"고 몰아세웠다.

조 후보 본인의 병역 면제 처분을 두고도 강도 높은 비난이 이어졌다. 조 후보 측은 '4급 보충역 장기 대기 소집면제는 법적 절차에 따른 것'이라고 해명했으나, 최 대변인은 이를 '눈치싸움의 결과물'로 규정했다. 

최 대변인은 "3년 동안 군대에 가지 않기 위해 얼마나 피눈물 나는 노력을 했겠느냐"며 "그럴 노력이면 자원입대를 했어야 옳다. 누구나 하는 병역 의무를 외면한 것"이라고 꼬집었다.

마지막으로 최 대변인은 조 후보를 향해 네거티브라는 핑계 뒤에 숨지 말라고 경고했다. 그는 결혼 후 배우자의 국적 회복이 즉시 이뤄지지 않은 이유, 해외 소득 미신고 및 납세 의무 회피 사유를 명백히 밝히라고 요구했다. 

아울러 "신성한 국방의 의무를 수행한 세종시민들에게 병역 면제 후보로서 미안한 마음이 있는지 답하라"며 압박 수위를 높였다.

Intense criticism also continued regarding Candidate Cho's own exemption from military service. Candidate Cho's camp explained that the "exemption from conscription due to long-term waiting for Grade 4 supplementary service was in accordance with legal procedures," but Spokesperson Choi characterized this as the "result of a game of wits."

"Just how much blood-stained effort must he have put in to avoid military service for three years?" Spokesperson Choi pointed out, adding, "If he put in that much effort, he should have voluntarily enlisted. He has turned his back on the military duty that everyone fulfills."

Finally, Spokesperson Choi warned Candidate Cho not to hide behind the excuse of "negative campaigning." He demanded that Cho clearly disclose the reasons why his spouse's citizenship was not restored immediately after marriage, as well as the reasons for failing to report overseas income and evading tax obligations.
