성광진 대전광역시교육감 예비후보가 기후위기 시대를 살아갈 아이들을 위해 학교를 ‘생태 학습의 장’으로 탈바꿈시키겠다는 구상을 내놨다. 

성 예비후보는 6일 대전세종충남 숲체험해설가협회와 정책협약을 체결하고, 학교숲 조성 및 활용 활성화를 골자로 한 ‘학교숲 기반 교육공약’을 공식 발표했다.

성 예비후보는 이날 협약식에서 기후위기 시대에 환경 교육은 이제 선택이 아닌 생존을 위한 필수라고 전제했다. 

아울러 아이들이 딱딱한 교실을 벗어나 자연의 품 안에서 생명의 소중함을 깨닫고 성장할 수 있도록 학교숲을 교육의 중심축으로 세우겠다고 강조했다.

이번 공약의 핵심은 단순한 녹지 조성을 넘어선 ‘교육형 숲’의 구현이다. 

성 예비후보는 학교숲을 활용한 교육 활성화를 위해 '학교숲 기반 교수·학습 방법 연구 및 보급, 학생 대상 환경교육 및 교직원 전문 연수 확대, 학교숲 활성화를 위한 대시민 홍보 강화 등을 단계적으로 추진할 방침이다.

특히 눈길을 끄는 대목은 외부 전문 인력과의 유기적인 협력 체계 구축이다. 

성 예비후보는 숲체험해설가 등 민간 전문가들을 활용해, 아이들이 자연 과학적 탐구력과 풍부한 감수성을 키울 수 있도록 지원할 계획이다.

또한 학교숲의 사회적 가치에 대해서도 명확한 비전을 제시했다. 

그는 학교숲은 학생들만의 전유물이 아니라 지역사회와 함께 호흡하는 공공자산이라며, 지역 주민들도 함께 이용할 수 있는 ‘열린 생태 공간’으로 개방해 지역사회와의 상생을 도모하겠다고 밝혔다.

한편 성 예비후보는 지난 4일에 이어 이날 협약을 마무리하며, 대전 지역 학교 내 숲 조성 사업에 박차를 가할 수 있는 민관 협력의 토대를 단단히 다졌다는 평을 받고 있다.
