김기재 더불어민주당 당진시장 후보가 최근 불거진 방송 토론회 불참 논란과 관련해 상대 후보의 주장을 정면으로 반박하며 사실관계 바로잡기에 나섰다.

김 후보는 5월 2일 언론에 보낸 메시지를 통해 "상대 측인 오성환 후보가 보낸 단체문자 내용은 사실을 왜곡한 것"이라며 "충남방송 주관 토론회는 일정 조율 중인 상태였다"고 해명했다. 

김기재 후보 측은 현재 선거 방송 토론위원회 주관 TV 토론회를 비롯해 5월 14일 시민·사회단체 및 언론사 공동주최 간담회, 5월 21일 당진시농업회의소 주관 토론회 등에 참석할 예정이라고 밝혔다.

그러나 김 후보의 해명과 달리 해당 토론회를 준비했던 방송사 관계자의 입장은 상반된다. 

방송사 측 관계자는 "김 후보 측에 토론회 일정을 조율하자고 요청했으나, 후보 측으로부터 '선거관리위원회 주관 토론회 이후에나 검토하겠다'는 답변을 받았다"고 전했다.

앞서 국민의힘 오성환 예비후보는 이날 오후 2시경 "오성환 후보입니다. 김기재후보 방송토론 수용 촉구" 문자를 보냈었다. 이보다 앞선 지난 4월 30일에는 보도자료를 통해 “LG헬로비전 주관으로 추진되던 정책토론회가 더불어민주당 김기재 후보의 거부로 결국 무산됐다”며 토론회 무산이 김 후보의 불참이라고 주장했다. 

오 후보 측에 따르면 방송사 측이 제시한 3개 일정(4월 29일·30일, 5월 1일) 중 양측의 상황을 고려해 29일로 협의가 진행되었으나, 김 후보가 일정상의 이유를 들어 불참을 통보하면서 토론회 자체가 불발되었다고 설명하고, “토론회 회피는 17만 당진시민의 알 권리를 짓밟는 무책임한 처사”라고 강도 높게 비판 했었다. 

지역 정가에서는 공식 선거운동 기간이 다가옴에 따라 후보 간의 토론회 참여 여부와 일정 조율 과정을 둘러싼 공방이 더욱 치열해질 것으로 전망하고 있다. 

김기재 후보 측은 향후 예정된 다수의 토론회와 간담회 일정을 강조하며 유권자들에게 다가가겠다는 입장이지만, 특정 방송 토론회에 대한 불참 배경을 두고 양측의 진실 공방은 당분간 지속될 것으로 보인다.
