시민 알 권리보다 중요한 ‘캠프 일정’은 없다

김기재 후보, 모호한 답변 대신 당당히 검증대 나서야

 

선거는 민주주의의 꽃이며, TV토론은 그 꽃을 피우기 위한 가장 핵심적인 검증 절차다. 

 

유권자는 토론을 통해 후보자의 자질과 정책, 위기 대처 능력을 현미경처럼 들여다본다. 그런데 최근 당진시장 선거판에서 들려오는 소식은 17만 당진시민의 기대에 찬물을 끼얹고 있다.

 

발단은 LG헬로비전 충남방송이 주관하려던 ‘당진시장 후보 초청 정책토론회’다. 국민의힘 오성환 후보 측은 방송사가 제안한 일정 중 4월 29일을 선택하며 공방 준비를 마쳤으나, 더불어민주당 김기재 후보 측의 불참으로 토론회는 무산 위기에 처했다. 

 

이를 두고 양측의 언사는 거칠다. 오 후보는 “일정 핑계 뒤에 숨지 말고 당당히 나오라”며 공세를 퍼부었고, 김 후보는 “상식적인 일정 조율을 거부로 왜곡하지 말라”며 맞서고 있다.

 

문제는 김 후보 측의 해명이 유권자들을 납득시키기에 턱없이 부족한 것 아니냐는 지적이다. 

 

김 후보는 입장문을 통해 캠프 개소식과 공약 발표 일정 등이 겹쳐 조율을 요청했을 뿐이라고 밝혔다. 하지만 정작 가장 중요한 ‘그래서 토론회를 할 것인가, 말 것인가’에 대한 확답은 김 후보측에서 언론에 보낸 입장문 어디에도 없다. 

 

시민들이 듣고 싶은 것은 “바쁘다”는 핑계가 아니라 “언제든 하겠다”는 명확한 약속이다.

 

김 후보의 주장대로 지금 이 순간 시민 곁에서 뛰고 있고, 정책으로 평가받는 것이 예의라고 생각한다면 더욱 TV토론을 피할 이유가 없다. 

 

수만 명의 시민이 동시에 지켜보는 방송 토론이야말로 자신의 정책을 가장 효과적으로 알릴 수 있는 ‘기회의 장’이기 때문이다. 

 

캠프 내부 행사나 간담회도 중요하겠으나, 시장이라는 중책을 맡겠다고 나선 후보에게 시민 전체를 대상으로 한 정책 검증보다 우선하는 일정이 무엇인지 되묻지 않을 수 없다.

 

유권자들의 시선은 싸늘하다. 

 

시민의 선택을 받고자 하는 선출직 정치인은 이유를 불문하고 토론에 응하지 않는 것은 자신감 결여로 비칠 수 있다.

 

일정 조율이 필요하다면 대안이 되는 날짜를 즉각 제시하고 협의에 나서면 될 일이다. 이를 생략한 채 ‘흑색선전’이라며 상대 후보를 비판하는 것은 본말이 전도된 처사다.

 

당진은 지금 대전환의 기로에 서 있다. 

 

지역 경제 활성화와 산적한 현안을 해결할 적임자를 찾는 유권자들에게 후보자 간의 치열한 토론은 선택을 위한 최소한의 도리다. 만약 김 후보가 끝내 모호한 답변으로 토론장을 외면한다면, 시민들은 그것을 ‘일정 조율’이 아닌 ‘검증 회피’로 규정할 것이다.

 

김기재 후보는 이제라도 설득력이 떨어지는 핑계를 거두고 날짜를 잡아 시민 앞에 서야 한다.
