오성환 “김 후보 토론 회피는 시민 무시” 정책 검증대 복귀 촉구

김기재 “일정 조율 요청을 거부로 왜곡” 흑색선전 중단 당부

6·3 지방선거를 앞두고 충남 당진시장 선거에 나선 국민의힘 오성환 예비후보와 더불어민주당 김기재 예비후보(이하 후보)가 방송 토론회 무산의 책임을 서로에게 돌리며 날 선 공방을 벌이고 있다.

국민의힘 오성환 예비후보는 30일 보도자료를 통해 “LG헬로비전 주관으로 추진되던 정책토론회가 더불어민주당 김기재 후보의 거부로 결국 무산됐다”며 김 후보를 강력히 규탄했다. 

오 후보 측에 따르면 방송사 측이 제시한 3개 일정(4월 29일·30일, 5월 1일) 중 양측의 상황을 고려해 29일로 협의가 진행되었으나, 김 후보가 일정상의 이유를 들어 불참을 통보하면서 토론회 자체가 불발되었다는 주장이다.

오 후보는 “시장 후보가 시민 앞에서 자신의 비전을 검증받는 자리보다 더 중요한 일정이 무엇이냐”고 반문하며 “토론회 회피는 17만 당진시민의 알 권리를 짓밟는 무책임한 처사”라고 강도 높게 비판했다.

김 후보는 “토론을 회피한 사실이 전혀 없으며, 방송사 요청 일정이 캠프 개소식 및 공약 발표 등 주요 일정과 겹쳐 상식적인 차원의 일정 조율을 요청했을 뿐”이라고 해명했다.

김 후보는 “현재 ‘당진시 대전환 11대 프로젝트’ 발표와 릴레이 정책 간담회를 통해 시민들과 치열하게 소통하고 있다”며 “단순한 일정 조율 과정을 토론 거부로 몰아가는 것은 전형적인 정치 공세”라고 일축했다. 

이어 오 후보를 향해 “근거 없는 흑색선전을 거두고 당진의 미래를 위한 정책 경쟁에 집중해 달라”고 덧붙였다.

지역 정가에서는 선거일이 다가올수록 두 후보 간의 기 싸움이 팽팽해지는 가운데, 이번 토론회 무산 논란이 유권자들의 표심에 어떤 영향을 미칠지 주목하고 있다. 

양측 모두 정책 선거를 표방하고 있지만, 토론회 개최 여부를 둘러싼 진실 공방이 가열되면서 당분간 냉랭한 분위기는 지속될 전망이다.
