정진석 전 대통령실 비서실장의 공주·부여·청양 국회의원 보궐선거 재등판 가능성이 제기되자 공주·부여·청양 지역 민심이 차갑게 얼어붙고 있다. 

지역 시민사회는 이번 출마 움직임을 ‘가문 정치의 연장’이자 ‘사법 리스크 회피용 방탄 출마’로 규정하며 강력한 저항을 예고했다.

가칭) ‘공주·부여·청양 미래정치 개혁시민연대’(이하 시민연대)는 29일 충남 공주 공산성 앞에서 기자회견을 열고 정 전 실장의 출마를 반대하는 공식 성명을 발표했다.

이들은 “지역 정치를 마치 특정 가문의 ‘가족회사’처럼 독점해 온 구조가 결과적으로 지역 인재들의 성장을 가로막았다”며 “36년 넘게 이어진 가문 정치의 고리를 이제는 끊어내야 한다”고 목소리를 높였다.

특히 국민의힘 공천관리위원장을 정 전 실장의 사돈인 박덕흠 의원이 맡고 있는 점을 들어 ‘사돈 찬스’라는 표현까지 등장했다. 

정 전 실장이 직면한 사법 리스크에 대한 날 선 비판도 이어졌다. 

시민연대는 그가 윤석열 정부의 핵심 인사로서 ‘12·3 비상계엄 사태’와 관련된 내란 음모 의혹 등에서 자유로운 입장이 아닌 위치라는 점을 강조했다. 국회의원의 불체포특권을 확보해 사법 심판을 피하려는 ‘방탄용 출마’라는 것이 이들의 주장이다.

시민연대는 정 전 실장이 출마를 강행할 경우 공청회, 집단 서명운동, 투표 거부 및 낙선 운동 등 모든 수단을 동원해 저항하겠다는 방침이다. 이번 반대 운동은 단순한 정당 간 대결을 넘어 ‘지역 정치의 자율성과 정의’를 지키기 위한 자존심 싸움으로 번지는 모양새다.

지역 정가에서는 “정진석 출마 = 지역의 정치적 자기결정권 포기”라는 프레임이 확산될 경우, 이번 보궐선거가 인물이나 정당 지지도를 넘어선 ‘정치 혁신’에 대한 심판대가 될 것으로 전망하고 있다. 

시민연대는 “민주주의와 충남의 명예를 지키기 위해 끝까지 싸우겠다”며 배수진을 쳤다.
