대전 서북부권의 새 교통 거점인 유성복합터미널이 28일 개통식을 갖고 본격 운영을 시작했다.

유성복합터미널은 대전도시철도 1호선 구암역 인근 유성광역복합환승센터 부지에 총 449억 원을 투입해 조성된 공영 여객자동차터미널로, 대지면적 1만5,000㎡, 연면적 3,858㎡ 규모다. 

하루 최대 6,500명이 이용할 수 있으며 도시철도와 시내버스, 택시 등 다양한 교통수단과 연계돼 환승 편의성을 높였다.

이번 개통으로 서울·청주·공주 등 전국 주요 도시를 오가는 32개 노선의 시외·직행·고속버스가 하루 300회 이상 운행된다. 이에 따라 그동안 흩어져 있던 유성권역 시외버스 노선이 한곳에 통합돼 시민들의 접근성과 이용 여건이 크게 개선될 전망이다.

2010년 민간사업 방식으로 추진됐던 이 사업은 사업성 저하와 수요 감소로 장기 표류했으나, 대전시가 2023년 공영방식으로 전환해 시 재정을 투입하면서 속도를 냈다. 지난해 12월 준공을 마치고 약 한 달 만에 운영에 들어갔다.

터미널은 승·하차와 환승 기능을 한곳에 모아 이동 동선을 최소화한 것이 특징이다. 특히 고령자와 교통약자가 보다 안전하고 편리하게 시설을 이용할 수 있도록 설계돼 ‘이동이 쉬운 교통 허브’로 평가받고 있다.

운영은 대전교통공사와 민간 터미널사업자가 공동으로 맡아 공공성과 전문성을 결합한 체계를 구축했다. 대전시는 이를 통해 이용객 중심의 서비스 향상과 지속 가능한 운영이 가능할 것으로 기대하고 있다.

터미널 주변에는 1만7,000㎡ 규모의 지원시설용지와 7,000㎡의 공공청사 용지가 확보돼 있다. 시는 향후 이 부지에 컨벤션·업무시설을 유치하고 공공기관을 이전해 주변 상권을 활성화한다는 계획이다.

이장우 대전시장은 “유성복합터미널은 대중교통 중심의 환승체계를 완성하는 핵심 시설”이라며 “서북부 권역의 교통 관문이자 시민 이동 편의의 거점으로 자리매김할 수 있도록 도로체계 개선과 운영관리에 힘쓰겠다”고 밝혔다.
