국가유산청 산하 국립문화유산연구원 문화유산보존과학센터가 지난 10년간 축적한 대형불화 정밀조사 성과를 집약한 '대형불화 과학적 조사 핸드북'을 내놓았다. 2015년부터 2024년까지 진행된 조사 결과를 토대로 마련된 이 책자는 대형불화 보존 연구의 현장 활용도를 높이기 위한 실무형 지침서다.

이번 조사에는 천은사 괘불탱과 해남 대흥사 영산회 괘불탱, 선암사 석가모니불 괘불탱, 영주 부석사 오불회 괘불탱, 문경 김룡사 영산회 괘불도 등 전국 주요 사찰에 전하는 대형불화 64점이 포함됐다. 장기간에 걸친 체계적 조사를 통해 작품별 제작 기법과 재료 특성, 손상 양상이 종합적으로 정리됐다.
