대전시가 바이오 산업의 새로운 중심지를 향한 첫발을 내디뎠다. 15일 대전시는 대덕연구개발특구 전민동 일원에서 ‘대전바이오창업원’(가칭) 착공식을 갖고, 2027년 본격 운영을 목표로 본격적인 공사에 들어갔다.

이날 착공식은 이장우 대전시장을 비롯해 지역 대학 총장, 바이오 스타트업 관계자 및 유관기관 인사 등 100여 명이 참석한 가운데 개최됐다. 행사는 개식 선언과 사업 경과보고, 축사, 시삽식으로 이어지며 대전 바이오산업의 도약을 예고했다.

대전바이오창업원은 총사업비 295억6천만 원(국비 100억 원 포함)을 투입해 지하 1층, 지상 5층, 연면적 7,200㎡ 규모로 조성된다. 이 공간에는 바이오 창업기업들이 입주할 수 있는 사무 및 실험 공간과 더불어 공동 장비실, 회의실, 협업 기관 공간 등이 마련될 예정이다.

단순한 창업 보육을 넘어, 대전바이오창업원은 바이오 스타트업 생태계를 통합적으로 지원하는 창업 혁신 거점으로 기능하게 된다.

특히 미국 보스턴의 대표적 바이오 창업 지원기관인 '랩센트럴(LabCentral)'의 운영 방식을 참고해, 공용 실험실 모델과 민간 중심의 투자 연계, 스타트업 졸업 시스템 등을 도입한다는 점에서 기대를 모은다.

대전시는 창업 초기 아이디어 실험 단계부터 기술 사업화, 투자 유치, 글로벌 시장 진출까지 창업 전 주기를 아우르는 맞춤형 지원체계를 구축할 계획이다. 

이를 통해 바이오 분야 창업 기업들이 빠르게 시장에 안착하고 성장할 수 있도록 돕겠다는 방침이다.

이장우 대전시장은 “대전바이오창업원은 단순한 창업 공간을 넘어, 세계를 향한 바이오 기업 성장의 첫걸음이 될 핵심 인프라”라며 “10년 안에 대전을 대한민국 바이오산업의 리딩 도시로 만들겠다는 비전 아래, 창의적인 기술력과 아이디어를 가진 기업을 적극 지원하겠다”고 강조했다.

대덕특구와 연구기관, 대학, 기업이 밀집한 대전은 바이오 창업 인프라를 갖추기에 최적의 지역으로 평가받고 있으며, 이번 창업원 건립을 기점으로 국내 바이오 산업을 선도하는 도시로 도약할 채비를 갖춰가고 있다.
