태안 마늘의 명성을 이어가는 가의도 육쪽마늘이 최근 수확과 동시에 육지 재배농가에 우량종구로 전량 공급되며 그 우수성을 널리 알리고 있다.

태안군은 지난 6월 30일 근흥면 가의도에서 육쪽마늘 7000접을 수확했으며, 다음 날인 7월 1일 종구 보급을 희망한 644개 농가 및 법인에 1접당 1만 9천 원에 보급하는 성과를 거두었다. 

이번 수확 작업은 태안 유황마늘생산자 영농조합법인 주관으로 120명이 참여했으며, 태안군이 1억 2600만 원의 필요 경비를 지원했다. 

가의도에서 재배되는 마늘은 토양 세균 감염이 적고, 바닷바람과 안개 등 악조건 속에서 자라 자생력이 뛰어나다. 또한 균에 의한 퇴화 현상이 적어 종구로서의 가치가 매우 높다. 

특히 태안산 마늘의 원종으로서 항균·항암 효과가 탁월한 알리신 성분을 다량 함유하고 있어 소비자들에게 큰 사랑을 받고 있다. 

군은 매년 우량종구 보급 사업을 꾸준히 추진하고 있으며, 앞으로도 가의도 육쪽마늘 생산을 위한 다양한 지원 사업을 펼쳐 태안 마늘의 명품화와 재배농가 소득 증대에 기여할 방침아다. 군 관계자는 "가의도산 육쪽마늘은 태안군의 대표 농산물로 국민들의 사랑을 받고 있다"며 지속적인 우량종구 보급 사업 추진 의지를 밝혔다.
