충남 서산시 가로림만 일대에 국내 최초의 국가지정 ‘갯벌 생태마을’이 들어선다. 충남도는 2일, 서산시 중왕·왕산어촌마을이 해양수산부의 ‘갯벌 생태마을 공모사업’에 최종 선정돼 향후 3년간 최대 8억6800만 원의 국비를 지원받게 됐다고 밝혔다.

이번 사업은 우수한 갯벌 생태자원을 보유한 해양·습지보호구역 내 마을을 대상으로, 자연 생태 보전과 지역 주민의 삶의 질 향상을 동시에 도모하기 위해 추진됐다. 충남 서산의 두 어촌마을과 함께 전북 고창 두어리어촌마을이 이번 공모에서 최초로 지정됐다.

갯벌 생태마을로 지정되면 이듬해부터는 ‘갯벌 생태마을 육성사업’ 신청 자격이 주어진다. 이에 따라 해양수산부는 관광 기반 조성과 환경보전 활동비, 주민 역량강화 프로그램, 맞춤형 생태해설사 인건비 등을 집중 지원할 계획이다.

중왕·왕산어촌마을은 가로림만을 따라 자리 잡은 전통 어촌 마을로, 2014년 어촌체험마을로 지정된 이후 주민 주도로 다양한 체험 프로그램과 생태 보전 활동을 이어오고 있다.
