이재명 정부 첫 교육부 장관 후보자로 지명된 이진숙 전 충남대학교 총장에 대해 충남대학교 민주동문회가 강하게 반발하며 지명 철회를 공식 요구하고 나섰다.

충남대 민주동문회장은 지난 30일 페이스북 성명을 통해 “이진숙 전 총장은 과거 국립대 최초 소녀상 건립 과정에서 보여준 비협조적 행정과 밀실 리더십, 생태 파괴적 개발 정책, 기회주의적 처신 등에서 교육 수장으로서의 자격이 부족하다”며 “이재명 정부의 시대정신과는 명백히 어긋난 인사”라고 비판했다.

민주동문회는 특히 2017년부터 추진된 충남대 평화의 소녀상 건립 과정을 언급하며, 당시 총장이었던 이 후보자의 불통과 방해 행태를 강하게 지적했다. 

전체 학생 대표자 회의 95.6% 찬성, 3700여 명의 서명 지지를 받고도 학교 측은 일본과의 외교 마찰 가능성 등을 이유로 설치를 반대했고, 2019년에는 전임 총장 명의로 조형물 설치 규정을 제정해 건립을 제도적으로 막았다고 주장했다.

이후 이진숙 전 총장은 이 규정을 앞세워 학생 처장을 통해 소녀상 추진위 재학생들에게 학점·취업상 불이익을 시사하는 압박까지 가했다는 것이 민주동문회의 설명이다. 

동문회는 “이 후보자는 끝내 대화 요청조차 외면했고, 소녀상을 지키기 위한 학생과 시민의 노력에도 강제 철거 방침을 고수했다”고 밝혔다.

이밖에도 이진숙 전 총장이 2022년 한밭대학교와의 통합을 밀실 행정으로 추진하다 학내 반발로 무산된 점, 2023년 충남대 서문 고유림 소나무 숲에 반도체 연구소 건립을 강행해 환경 훼손 논란을 자초한 점도 함께 거론됐다. 

민주동문회는 이를 “개발 독재식 사고와 생태 파괴주의적 행보”로 규정하며 “학문 공동체와 자연 생태계를 경시한 무책임한 행정”이라고 성토했다.

정치적 편향성과 기회주의적 행태에 대한 우려도 포함됐다. 

동문회는 “이진숙 전 총장은 문재인 정부 시절 여성 우대 정책에 따라 총장에 임명된 직후, 윤석열 대통령 당선 당시에는 새벽 6시 축전을 보내며 정권 줄서기에 나섰다”며 “충남대 내부 구성원의 지지조차 받지 못한 인물이며, 윤석열 정부의 통제형 교육정책에 기꺼이 협조한 전력이 있다”고 비판했다.

이어 “교육의 공공성과 지역 균형발전을 강조한 이재명 정부가 이진숙 후보자 지명을 강행한다면, 첫 장관 인선부터 시대정신에 어긋난다는 비판을 면하기 어려울 것”이라며 “청문회 전에 지명을 철회해 국민주권 정부의 방향성과 위상이 훼손되지 않도록 해야 한다”고 강조했다.

충남대 민주동문회는 이재명 정부가 출범 초기 약속한 교육 공공성 회복, 고등교육 강화, 지역균형 발전 등의 국정 철학이 이번 인사를 통해 훼손될 수 있다는 점을 지적하며, 교육부 장관직은 시대정신을 반영한 인물로 새롭게 지명되어야 한다는 입장을 밝혔다.

한편 이진숙 전 총장의 장관 지명 발표 이후, 충남대 내부 구성원과 대전지역 시민사회단체 일각에서도 반발의 목소리가 이어지고 있다.
