국제과학비즈니스벨트 조성사업이 사실상 마지막 단계에 진입하면서 대전의 ‘과학수도’ 비전이 구체화되고 있다.

대전시는 26일 국제과학비즈니스벨트 거점지구인 신동·둔곡 지역의 4단계 기반시설 조성이 완료돼 준공을 승인했다고 밝혔다. 

2016년 첫 삽을 뜬 이후 10년간 진행돼 온 이 사업은 현재 전체 5단계 가운데 4단계까지 마무리되며 사실상 막바지에 이르렀다. 시는 오는 10월 최종 준공을 목표로 사업 마무리에 속도를 낼 방침이다.

이번 4단계 준공은 단순한 기반시설 완공을 넘어, 과학과 산업, 정주 환경이 어우러진 융복합 혁신클러스터가 현실화되고 있다는 점에서 의미가 크다.

국제과학비즈니스벨트는 기초과학 연구 중심의 글로벌 연구 환경 조성을 목표로 한 국책사업으로, RAON(중이온가속기)과 같은 국가 대형 과학 시설을 중심으로 첨단 산업단지와 주거환경, 창업 생태계 등을 연계하는 것이 핵심이다.

현재까지 총 345만㎡ 규모의 사업부지 가운데 약 305만㎡(약 88%)가 분양 완료됐다. 입주 확정 또는 준비 중인 기업과 연구기관은 112곳에 이른다. 입주 기관 중에는 중이온가속기를 비롯해 충남대학교, 첨단소재·바이오 분야 선도 기업 등 과학기술 기반의 핵심 주체들이 다수 포함돼 있다.

대전시는 이번 4단계 준공을 계기로 산업용지 공급 확대, 지역 재투자 구조 구축, 기업 유치 활성화 등에 박차를 가할 계획이다. 특히, 기존에 미분양 상태였던 연구용지 약 13만㎡는 산업용지로 전환해 우수 기업 유치에 활용할 방침이다.

또한, 사업 시행자인 한국토지주택공사(LH)와 긴밀히 협력해 발생한 개발이익이 지역에 재투자될 수 있도록 제도적 기반도 마련할 예정이다.

이장우 대전시장은 “국제과학비즈니스벨트가 9부 능선을 넘어선 만큼, 남은 구간도 빈틈없이 마무리해 대전이 명실상부한 과학수도로 자리매김할 수 있도록 하겠다”며 “과학기술을 기반으로 한 고부가가치 산업 생태계 조성에 시의 모든 역량을 집중하겠다”고 말했다.
