더불어민주당 장종태 국회의원(대전 서구갑)은 항공우주연구원(항우연)과 한국천문연구원(천문연)의 경남 사천 이전 추진을 "국가 과학기술의 뿌리를 흔드는 정치적 폭거"라며 강도 높게 비판했다. 

장 의원의 발언은 최근 국민의힘 의원들을 중심으로 발의된 특별법 개정안에 대해, 과학기술에 대한 철학은커녕, 지역 정치논리에 따른 무리한 이전이라는 점에서 강력한 반대 입장을 분명히 한 것으로 보인다.

19일 오후 대전시의회 기자실에서 긴급 기자회견을 개최한 장 의원은 "이전 추진은 50년 넘게 축적된 대전의 국가 연구개발 인프라를 무너뜨리는 처사이며, 이는 단순한 행정 이관이 아니라 과학도시 대전에 대한 명백한 배신"이라고 일갈했다. 

이어 항우연과 천문연은 단순한 연구시설이 아니라 협력과 축적의 결정체이자, 대한민국 우주전략의 3대 축인 사천-고흥-대전(세종) 구도의 핵심 중 하나라고 강조하며, 이전 자체가 전략적 균형을 무너뜨릴 것이라고 경고했다.

특히 일부 충청권 야당 의원들이 법안에 공동 서명했다가 여론 악화를 의식해 서명을 철회한 것에 대해 "정치적 책임 회피에 불과하다"고 지적하며, “지금이라도 진정성 있는 사과와 함께 법안 철회에 앞장서야 한다”고 압박했다. 

야권 내에서도 파열음이 감지된다. 국민의힘 대전시당 역시 “자당 의원의 발의일지라도, 대전의 과학 수도로서의 정체성을 훼손하는 법안은 수용 불가”라며 철회를 요구하고 나섰다.

과학기술계와 노동계의 반발도 거세다. 전국과학기술연구전문노조 항우연지부는 “정치적 셈법에 따른 연구기관 이전은 과학을 무시하는 행위”라며 즉각 철회를 촉구했고, 다수 과기 단체들도 “졸속 행정이 국가 경쟁력을 떨어뜨릴 것”이라는 공동 성명을 발표했다.

장 의원은 향후 대응 계획에 대해서, 국회 과학기술정보방송통신위원회(과방위) 차원의 입법 저지를 비롯해, 대전시·시민사회·과학기술계와의 공동대응 체계 구성, 국정감사 및 청문회 추진, 시민 설명회 및 서명운동 등 전방위적 대응에 나설 방침이라는 입장을 분명히 했다.
