충남 공주시청(시장 최원철) 근무 A사무관이 경찰의 음주 단속에 적발된 사실이 확인되며, 공직사회 전반의 기강 해이가 또다시 도마에 올랐다. 특히 이번에 적발된 인물이 공보 업무를 총괄하고 있는 핵심 간부라는 점에서 시민들의 충격은 더욱 크다.

A사무관은 지난 4월 중순 공주고등학교 앞 노상에서 실시된 경찰의 음주 단속에 걸려 적발됐다. 

적발 당시 혈중알코올농도는 0.05를 조금 상회하는 수치로 면허 정지와 벌금 처분에 해당한다.

이 사건은 지난 23일 <브레이크뉴스>의 취재가 시작되면서 수면 위로 드러났다. 

<브레이크뉴스>는 23일 A사무관의 입장을 듣기 위해 근무지로 전화를 했으나 동료 직원은 A사무관이 오후에 조퇴를 했다는 확인을 해줬다.

A사무관은 그동안 언론과의 가교 역할을 맡으며 시정을 알리는 데 핵심 역할을 해왔고, 시 내부에서도 차기 국장 승진이 유력시되던 인물이었다. 

그러나 이번 음주운전 적발로 그의 승진은 사실상 물 건너간 것으로 보인다. 

공주시 내부에서는 “승진을 앞두고 이런 사고를 낸 것은 중대한 기강 해이”라며 자조 섞인 반응이 나오고 있다.

A사무관은 본지와의 통화에서 음주 단속 사실을 확인해 주면서 당시 상황에 대해 "전 날 오후 8시 30분경 대리운전을 통해 귀가를 하고, 출근길 오전 9시 01분 경 공주고등학교 앞에서 실시한 경찰의 음주 단속에 적발됐다"고 말했다.

음주 단속에 적발된 A사무관은 오는 6월 5일 충남도 징계위원회에 참석해 소명하는 절차를 이행하게 된다.

공주지역 시민단체 관계자는 “공직자의 일탈이 반복되는데도 조직 차원의 경고나 쇄신이 보이지 않는다”며 “이번 사안도 뚜렷한 징계 없이 유야무야 넘어갈 경우, 공직사회에 잘못된 메시지를 줄 수 있다”고 비판했다.

공주시 관계자는 본지의 확인 요청에 “사실 관계를 파악 중이며, 필요한 조치는 절차에 따라 진행할 예정”이라고 밝혔다. 하지만 사실이 명확히 드러난 상황에서 '절차'를 언급하며 시간을 벌려는 듯한 대응은, 시민들의 불신만 키울 뿐이다.
