오세현 아산시장이 8일 중부권 동서횡단철도의 국가계획 반영을 촉구하는 릴레이 챌린지에 동참하며, 지역 균형발전을 위한 철도망 확충의 당위성을 강조했다.

이번 챌린지는 충남 서산시를 시작으로 중부권 13개 시·군이 순차적으로 참여하고 있으며, 오 시장은 예산군에 이어 참여해 중부권 철도사업의 필요성을 널리 알렸다. 참여 지자체는 서산, 당진, 예산, 아산, 천안, 청주, 증평, 괴산, 문경, 예천, 영주, 봉화, 울진 등이다.

중부권 동서횡단철도는 충남 서산에서 경북 울진까지 총 연장 330km에 달하는 대형 철도 프로젝트로, 총 사업비는 약 7조 원으로 추산된다. 노선은 서해안 산업지역과 동해안 관광벨트를 연결하는 역할을 하며, 완공 시 서해~동해를 약 2시간 내로 이동할 수 있게 된다.
