충남 공주소방서가 일상 속 무심코 버린 담배꽁초가 산불의 주요 원인이 되고 있다며 시민들에게 각별한 주의를 당부하고 나섰다.

공주소방서에 따르면, 최근 5년간(2019~2024년) 공주시에서 발생한 산불 35건 중 31건(약 89%)이 부주의로 인한 화재였으며, 그 중 담배꽁초로 인한 실화가 전체의 42.9%를 차지한 것으로 나타났다. 

이어 쓰레기 소각(17.1%), 임야 태우기(14.3%) 등이 뒤를 이었다.

담배꽁초는 작고 사소해 보이지만, 화재를 일으키기에는 충분히 위험한 불씨다. 

담배가 연소할 때의 온도는 800℃에 달하며, 한 개비가 완전히 타는 데 15분 이상이 걸릴 수 있어, 꽁초를 버린 한참 후에도 불이 붙을 위험이 있다. 

실제로 산림 인근이나 도로변, 생활 주변에서 아무렇지 않게 버려진 담배꽁초가 잔불을 남기고 산불로 번지는 사례가 반복되고 있다.

공주소방서는 이에 따라 산림 지역에서 흡연 금지 및 꽁초 무단 투기 금지와 보행 중, 운전 중 흡연 삼가기, 지정된 장소에서 흡연하기, 꽁초는 반드시 불씨를 완전히 끄고 재떨이에 버리기 등  화재 예방 수칙을 준수해줄 것을 당부하고 있다:
