대전시교육청이 교육복지 사각지대에 놓인 취약 학생들을 지원하기 위해 '희망교실' 운영에 약 2억 9천만 원을 지원할 계획이라고 13일 밝혔다.

희망교실은 담임교사가 멘토가 되어 교육취약 학생들의 학교 적응력 향상 및 교육적 성장을 돕는 멘토링 프로그램으로, 교육복지사가 배치되지 않은 초·중·고 242개 학교를 대상으로 운영된다. 

각 학교는 운영계획서를 제출하여 심사를 거쳐 학급당 최대 50만 원의 예산을 지원받으며, 약 580개 학급이 참여할 예정이다.

참여 학급은 선생님과의 멘토링을 통해 학습 습관을 형성하고, 다양한 만들기 체험을 통해 친구들과의 유대감을 높이는 활동을 진행한다. 이를 통해 낙인감을 방지하고, 학급 친구들과 함께하는 경험을 통해 긍정적인 학교 생활을 도모할 계획이다.

작년에 희망교실에 참여했던 한 교사는 “학교생활에 잘 적응하는 학생들을 보며 큰 보람을 느꼈다”고 소감을 전하며, 매년 교사와 학생 모두 높은 만족도를 보이고 있다고 덧붙였다. 참여 학급 수도 지속적으로 증가하고 있는 추세다.

대전시교육청 차은서 교육복지안전과장은 “희망교실을 통해 교사가 학생들을 더 잘 이해하고 도울 수 있는 계기가 되길 바라며, 학생들에게는 교육적 성장의 기회가 되기를 희망한다”고 말했다. 이어 “앞으로도 교육취약 학생들에게 필요한 지원이 지속적으로 이루어질 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 강조했다.
