충남 서천군이 장항읍 송림리와 화천리 일대를 중심으로 추진 중인 브라운필드 종합개발 사업이 본격화된다. 이번 사업을 통해 과거 장항제련소로 인해 오염됐던 지역이 대한민국 최초의 자연복원형 관광지로 탈바꿈할 전망이다.

서천군에 따르면, 약 2,600억 원이 투입되어 총 21개 사업이 추진되며, 주요 사업으로는 ▲장항국가습지복원사업 ▲서천생태관광센터 조성 ▲장항 스카이워크 맥문동 하늘길 조성 등이 포함된다. 이를 통해 송림산림욕장과 해양생물자원관, 장항스카이워크와 연계한 국제적 자연복원 관광지로 발전시킨다는 목표다.

특히 장항국가습지복원사업은 지난해 예비타당성조사를 통과하며 국비 685억 원을 확보했고, 오는 2026년 공사에 착수할 예정이다. 이 사업은 장항제련소 주변 습지를 복원하여 생태계 보전과 관광 활성화를 동시에 도모할 계획이다.

서천군은 충청남도와의 협력을 통해 연계사업비 150억 원을 추가로 확보해 서천생태관광센터 조성 사업도 본격화하고 있다. 또한, 민간 투자를 유치해 대규모 숙박시설 개발을 추진하며 관광객 수용 능력을 강화할 방침이다.

김기웅 서천군수는 “장항 브라운필드 종합개발 사업을 통해 서천을 국제적 자연복원 관광지로 도약시키고, 지역 경제 활성화와 일자리 창출에 기여할 것”이라며 “민간 투자 유치와 대규모 숙박시설 조성에도 적극적으로 나서겠다”고 강조했다.

한편, 장항 브라운필드 일대는 장항제련소 운영으로 심각한 환경오염을 겪었던 곳이다. 환경부는 2009년부터 오염된 토지 약 110만㎡를 매입해 2013년부터 정화 작업을 진행, 2020년 정화를 완료한 바 있다. 

이번 사업을 통해 해당 지역이 환경오염의 상징에서 자연복원의 대표적인 사례로 거듭나게 되길 기대해 본다.
