의과대학 설립에 행정력을 집중하고 있는 국립공주대학교가 지난해 8월 1일부터 12월 31일까지 추진해 온 국립공주대 의과대학 설립 서명운동에 809223명이 참여했다고 밝혔다. 

이는 2024년 12월 31일 기준으로, 온·오프라인 참여자를 포함한 수치이다.

이번 서명운동은 국립공주대학교와 충남도, 예산군의 숙원인 국립의대 설립을 통해 충남의 의료 격차를 해소하고자 하는 220만 충남도민의 염원과 결의를 모으기 위해 실시되었다. 

현재 전국에는 40개의 국립 및 사립 의대가 있으며, 입학정원은 총 3058명에 달하지만, 충남에는 국립의대와 국립대학 병원이 부재하다. 특히 충남 서북부 지역의 경우 인구 1000명당 의사 수가 0.87명으로, 이는 전국 최하위 수준에 해당한다.

80만 명 이상의 참여자는 220만 충남도민의 간절한 염원을 반영한 결과로, 국립공주대는 이번 서명운동을 바탕으로 충남 내 국립의대 설립의 필요성을 정부에 적극적으로 설명할 계획이다.

임경호 총장은 “지역 및 필수의료 기반을 강화하기 위해서는 국립의대가 없는 충남에 국립의대를 설립하여 지역 의료 기반을 구축하는 것이 급선무”라며, “정부 및 유관기관 등을 설득하여 국립공주대 의과대학 신설을 반드시 이뤄내겠다”라고 강조했다.

이번 서명운동은 충남 지역의 의료 환경 개선을 위한 중요한 이정표가 될 것으로 기대된다.
