대전시의회가 13일 열린 제282회 제2차 정례회 제3차 본회의에서 송활섭 의원(무소속, 대덕구2)이 건의한 청주국제공항의 활성화 전략 마련을 촉구하는 대정부 건의안을 채택했다.

이번 건의안은 충청광역연합 출범과 충청권 광역급행철도(CTX) 구축 등 광역행정 수요와 교통환경 변화에 적극 대응하기 위해 청주국제공항의 민간 전용 활주로 신설과 국제선 화물터미널 확충 방안을 마련할 것을 촉구하는 내용을 담고 있다.

청주국제공항은 올해 1997년 개항 이후 27년 만에 연간 국제선 이용객이 400만 명을 돌파할 정도로 높은 여객 수요를 보이고 있지만, 항공 노선과 활주로, 편의 시설 등 공항 인프라는 여전히 부족하여 이용객들의 불편이 지속되고 있다. 

송 의원은 현재 청주국제공항의 활주로가 단 2개뿐이며, 이마저도 공군 전용으로 사용되거나 군과 공유하고 있어 민간항공기 전용 활주로가 없다고 지적했다.

또한, 2,744미터의 짧은 활주로는 대형 여객기나 화물기의 이·착륙이 어려워 장거리 항공 노선 확보와 항공물류산업 활성화에 큰 걸림돌이 되고 있다고 강조했다.

송 의원은 “청주국제공항은 더 이상 지방정부의 공항이 아닌, 충청권 메가시티의 동반성장과 공동 번영의 중심”이라며, “민간 전용 활주로 신설을 위한 특별법 제정과 내년 국토교통부에서 수립 예정인 제7차 공항개발 종합계획에 민간 전용 활주로 신설과 국제선 화물전용 터미널 확장 방안을 반드시 반영해야 한다”고 건의안 발의 이유를 설명했다.

이날 채택된 건의안은 국회, 정부 및 주요 정당 등에 전달될 예정이다. 송 의원의 이번 발의가 청주국제공항의 발전과 지역 경제 활성화에 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

Daejeon City Council Rep. Song Hwal-seop (Independent, Daedeok-gu 2) proposed a motion to the government to urge the establishment of a strategy to vitalize Cheongju International Airport at the 3rd plenary session of the 282nd 2nd regular session held on the 13th.

This motion contains the content of urging the establishment of a private runway and expansion of the international cargo terminal at Cheongju International Airport in order to actively respond to the demands of metropolitan administration and changes in the transportation environment, such as the launch of the Chungcheong Metropolitan Union and the construction of the Chungcheong Metropolitan Express Railway (CTX).

Cheongju International Airport is showing high passenger demand, with annual international passengers exceeding 4 million this year for the first time in 27 years since its opening in 1997, but airport infrastructure, such as flight routes, runways, and convenience facilities, is still lacking, causing continued inconvenience to users.

Rep. Song pointed out that Cheongju International Airport currently has only two runways, and even these are used exclusively for the Air Force or shared with the military, so there is no runway exclusively for civilian aircraft.

He also emphasized that the short runway of 2,744 meters makes it difficult for large passenger or cargo aircraft to take off and land, which is a major obstacle to securing long-distance air routes and revitalizing the aviation logistics industry.

Rep. Song explained the reason for proposing the motion, saying, “Cheongju International Airport is no longer a local government airport, but a center for the shared growth and common prosperity of the Chungcheong megacity,” and “The establishment of a special law for the construction of a civilian-only runway and the expansion of the international cargo terminal must be reflected in the 7th Comprehensive Airport Development Plan to be established by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport next year.”

The motion adopted that day will be delivered to the National Assembly, the government, and major political parties. It is expected that Rep. Song’s motion this time will contribute to the development of Cheongju International Airport and the revitalization of the local economy.
