대전펜싱의 자랑 대전시청 소속 오상욱·박상원 선수가 8일, ‘금의환향’ 했다.

이장우 대전시장은 8일 오전 시청에서 대전 펜싱의 저력으로 파리올림픽 무대에서 세계를 제패하고 돌아온 대전시청 펜싱팀 소속 오상욱․박상원 선수를 만나 격려했다.

접견에 앞서 200여 명의 시청 직원들은 두 선수 도착시간에 맞춰 시청을 방문한 시민들과 함께 시청 로비에 모여 미리 준비한 환영 현수막 등을 펼치고 깜짝 환영 행사도 펼쳤다.

이 시장은 선수들에게 대전 0시 축제 굿즈인 모자와 티셔츠를 선물했고, 선수들은 파리올림픽에서 사용한 펜싱 칼에 사인을 담아 이 시장에게 선물했다.

이장우 대전시장은 “오상욱, 박상원 선수가 이룬 성취는 대전시민의 명예고 긍지가 됐다. 선수들의 성취에 소홀함이 없도록 두 선수에 대한 포상을 검토할 것”이라고 말했다. 

이어 “우송대 펜싱부가 창단되면서 고교에서 대학 그리고 실업팀까지 연결되는 체육 시스템이 갖춰졌다”라며 “대전시는 2027 하계세계대학경기를 목표로 펜싱체육관 조성을 준비해 왔다. 파리올림픽에서 금메달을 따면 오상욱체육관으로 명명하겠다고 약속했는데 그 약속이 이뤄질 수 있게 돼서 기쁘다”라고 덧붙였다.

오상욱 선수는 “오상욱체육관을 지어주신다는 것에 어깨가 무거웠지만 그 힘으로 좋은 성적을 낼 수 있었다. 대전은 나의 보금자리다. 그런 대전에서 이름을 알릴 수 있어서 기분 좋고, 앞으로 성심당을 뛰어넘는 선수가 되겠다”고 강조했다. 

박상원 선수도 “첫 올림픽이었는데 성장할 수 있는 계기였다. 늦은 시간까지 응원해 주셔서 감사하다. 저 역시 성심당을 뛰어 넘어 박상원체육관을 지을 수 있도록 커리어를 열심히 쌓겠다”라고 답했다.

한편, 오상욱 선수는 이번 파리올림픽 개인전 금메달 획득으로 대한민국 최초로 세계선수권, 아시아선수권, 아시안게임 포함 4개 대회를 석권하는 그랜드슬램을 달성했다. 

박상원 선수는 사브르 남자단체전에서 세계 최상위 선수들을 대상으로 펄펄 날며 단체전 올림픽 3연패 달성을 견인했다. 

오상욱 선수와 박상원 선수는 9일 개막하는 “2024 대전 0시 축제” 개막행사에도 참여할 예정이다.
