충남 서산시가 18일 류방택 천문기상과학관 일원에서 개최된 ‘제16회 류방택 별 축제’에서 제1회 류방택 과학영재상 시상식을 개최했다고 밝혔다.

제16회 류방택 별 축제 개막식에서 진행된 시상식은 류방택 선생의 정신을 계승하고 전국의 과학 인재를 발굴, 육성하기 위해 추진됐다.

전국 중고등학생을 대상으로 진행된 과학영재상은 전국 46명의 학생이 지원했으며, 서산시는 과학 분야에서 탁월한 재능을 발휘한 손호준(삼천중학교) ,김지애(칠금중학교) ,함이정(서산중학교) ,정서준(표선고등학교) ,안규성(제일고등학교) ,천정환(충남과학고등학교) 학생 등 6명을 시상했다.

이완섭 서산시장은 수상 학생에게 상패와 시상금 각 100만 원을 전달했으며, 상패는 류방택 선생이 제작에 참여한 천상열차분야지도를 형상화했다.

또한 “이번 시상식을 시작으로 매년 대회 및 시상식을 개최해 류방택 선생의 정신을 계승하고, 과학 인재 발굴과 성장을 지지해 나가겠다”고 말했다.

한편 류방택 선생은 서산 출신의 천문학자로, 태조 이성계의 명으로 천문도 제작에서 핵심 역할인 천문 계산을 담당했으며 국보 제228호 천상열차분야지도 각석을 남겼다.

우리나라는 만 원권 뒷면에 천상열차분야지도를 사용하고 있으며, 2000년 12월 우리나라에서 새롭게 관측한 소행성에 ‘류방택 XC44’라는 이름을 붙여 그의 업적을 기렸다.

특히 서산시는 류방택 선생의 업적을 기리기 위해 매년 류방택 별 축제를 개최하고 있다.
