‘불교 낙화법’은 사찰에서 낙화봉을 제작하고 의식에 맞추어 낙화를 태우며 재앙소멸과 복을 기원하던 불교 의례로, 축제 성격을 가지는 낙화놀이와는 구별된다.

세종시가 사찰 의식에 맞춰 낙화를 태우며 재앙소멸과 복을 기원하던 ‘세종 불교 낙화법’을 시 무형문화재로 지정했다고 14일 밝혔다.

현재까지 알려진 바로는 사찰에서 이루어지는 낙화법은 세종시에서 봉행되고 있는 것이 유일한 사례라 할 수 있다.

또한 구전으로 전승된 것이 아닌 간략하게나마 ‘오대진언집’(영평사 소장)에 낙화법의 절차가 묵서되어 있는 특징이 있다.

의례는 예비의식, 본의식, 소재(消災)의식, 축원과 회향(回向) 의식 순으로 진행된다. 

절차에 따라 종이, 숯, 소금, 향을 준비하고 축원 발원 후 낙화봉을 제작하고, 낙화 점화와 함께 수구즉득다라니 등을 염송하며 재난·재앙 예방과 의식에 참여한 모든 이들을 축원하며 의례를 마친다.

세종시는 세종 불교 낙화법의 시 무형문화재로 지정과 함께 불교 낙화법 보유단체로 불교낙화법보존회(대표 환성스님)를 인정했다.

보유단체로 인정된 불교낙화법보존회는 세종 불교 낙화법을 전형대로 구현할 수 있는 전승 능력을 갖췄고, 전승 의지 및 기량 등이 탁월한 점을 인정받았다.

세종시는 이번 무형문화재 지정 및 보유단체 인정으로 지역의 특색있는 무형문화유산을 지키는 계기로 삼고, 다양한 지역 유산의 지속적인 발굴과 전승에 더욱 힘써 나간다는 계획이다.
