‘대한민국 1호 온천도시’ 타이틀을 충남 아산시가 획득했다. 

행정안전부는 13일 아산시를 ‘온천도시’로 지정했다고 밝혔다. 

아산시는 국내 최고(最古) 온천이자 조선 왕실 온천으로 유명한 온양온천을 비롯해 도고온천, 아산온천 등 관내에 3개 온천지구를 보유하고 있는 전국 유일의 도시다.

온천도시는 온천 온도 및 성분, 온천 관련 지역축제, 온천 이용현황 및 발전 가능성 등을 따져 행정안전부 장관이 지자체 신청을 받아 지정한다. 

지난 6월 1일부터 7일까지 진행된 온천도시 지정 공모에는 충남 아산시를 비롯해 충북 충주시, 경북 울진군, 경남 창녕군 등이 도전장을 던졌으며 ‘전국 최초 온천도시 지정’ 타이틀을 놓고 치열한 경쟁을 펼쳤다. 

아산시는 행정안전부가 온천도시 본격 지정에 앞서 예비 사업으로 시행한 시범도시 사업에 선정돼 업무를 성공적으로 수행한 점, 대한민국온천대축제 및 헬스케어‧스파산업 박람회 개최, 2023 대한민국 온천산업박람회 개최 예정 등 온천산업 활성화와 가치 제고, 신성장 동력 확보를 위한 노력 등에서 좋은 평가를 받았다. 

박경귀 아산시장은 민선 8기 주요 공약으로 온천도시 지정과 온천 산업 부활을 내걸고 온천도시 지정 평가 현장 심사에서는 안내자로, PT 심사에서는 발표자로 나서 시의 적극적인 의지를 피력한 바 있다. 

박 시장은 온천도시 지정 확정 소식을 듣고 “‘최고(最古) 온천도시’인 아산이 ‘최초 온천도시’ 타이틀까지 거머쥔 만큼, 이제 대한민국 최고(最高) 온천도시로 거듭나는 일만 남았다”면서 “아산시는 대한민국 1호 온천도시로서 온천산업 전체를 선도하며 지역 온천산업은 물론, 대한민국 온천산업 전체에 새로운 활력을 불어넣겠다”는 포부를 밝혔다. 

한편 아산시는 오는 10월 26일부터 29일까지 4일간 행정안전부 주최 2023 대한민국 온천산업박람회 막바지 준비에 한창이다.
