[Nuclear fusion (R&D)-Abaco, new concept ECR plasma sputtering technology transfer contract]

Plasma display/semiconductor manufacturing technology that can dramatically increase device lifespan and stability is transferred to a domestic company, and full-scale mass production equipment development is promoted.

On the 17th, Korea Fusion Energy Research Institute (hereinafter referred to as fusion research, President Yoo Seok-jae) signed a technology transfer contract with Avaco (CEO Kim Kwang-hyun) on the 17th for the “sputtering technology using ECR plasma” and is promoting the development of next-generation display deposition mass production equipment. said.
ECR plasma sputtering technology can independently control the generation of high-density plasma and voltage regulation near the target, minimizing damage to the thin film by high-energy particles, and depositing high-quality thin films at low temperatures through the thin film surface heating effect. It is advanced technology.

However, in the case of the existing technology, there was a limit to large-scale mass production due to the loss of deposition rate due to device structural problems, the short lifespan of the microwave generator, and the size of the internal and external vacuum chambers.
On the other hand, nuclear fusion’s ‘new concept ECR plasma sputtering technology’ transferred this time can operate at a process pressure 10 times lower than that of the existing sputtering technology, and it can control the deposition rate and particle energy, thereby dramatically improving device lifespan and stability. Accordingly, it is expected that it can be applied to the next-generation display thin film deposition process, which has not been realized by existing devices.

Avaco Co., Ltd. is a comprehensive equipment company in the high-tech industry that has been collaborating with nuclear fusion for the past 13 years in the development of sputtering technology. Based on this technology transfer, Avaco plans to secure mass production technology for the first time in the world and expand its share in the domestic and overseas next-generation semiconductor and display manufacturing markets.

Senior Researcher Kim Seong-bong, who is in charge of technology transfer, said, “This technology is a new concept technology that has dramatically improved mass production, which has been a task to be solved. We expect that it will be able to contribute to increasing the

“This case of technology transfer will be an exemplary case in which the research institute and small and medium-sized enterprises in Korea continue to collaborate for a long period of time based on trust and contribute to the development of industrial technology,” said Yoo Seok-jae, president of the Nuclear Fusion Research Institute. We will do our best to contribute to the development of the national industry by spreading the excellent research results of the company to various industrial fields.”

※ ECR: Abbreviation for Electron Cyclotron Resonance. It is a method of heating electrons with microwaves. It means heating by making resonance by matching the microwave frequency to each frequency of electrons.
※ Sputtering: A physical deposition method used for various electrode deposition and OLED oxide film deposition in the thin film manufacturing process in the field of semiconductors and displays.
