한국조폐공사가 과학의 날(21일)을 맞아 국보 ‘천상열차분야지도각석’의 천문도를 기념메달로 제작해 판매한다고 밝혔다.

 

‘천상열차분야지도각석(天象列次分野之圖刻石)’은 천체의 형상을  직육면체의 돌에 새겨 놓은 천문도이다. 별자리 그림 중심에는 북극을 두고 황도와 남북극 가운데로 적도를 표시했다.

 

황도 부근의 하늘은 12개로 나누고, 1,467개의 별들을 점으로 표시하여 눈으로 관찰할 수 있는 별들을 총망라하고 있다.

 

조선을 건국한 태조 이성계가 왕조의 권위를 드러내고자 제작을 명하여 권근, 유방택 등 11명의 천문학자들이 참여하여 완성했다. 이 각석천문도는 세계에서 두 번째로 오래된 것으로 조선시대 천문과학기술을 대표하는 유물이다.

 

‘천상열차분야지도각석’은 한국 천문학 최고 자랑거리로 경이로울 정도의 정밀도를 자랑해 1985년 국보로 지정됐다. 조폐공사는 지난해부터 조선 왕실 문화를 담은 프리미엄 컬렉션 ‘로열 시리즈’를 통해 국민들에게 문화 향유권을 확대하고 있는데, 이번에 천상열차분야지도각석 속 그림으로 만든 ‘천상열차분야지도 기념메달’은 세 번째 작품이다.
