‘고종 아들의 상여’로 알려지며 큰 관심을 끈 ‘태안 승언리 상여’가 옛 모습을 되찾고 마침내 모습을 드러낸다.

충남 태안군은 23일부터 2022년 2월 13일까지 53일간 태안동학농민혁명기념관 1층 기획전시실에서 ‘승언리 상여, 옛 모습을 되찾다!’라는 주제로 특별전시회를 연다고 밝혔다.

 
승언리 상여는 조선 제26대 왕 고종의 큰아들인 완화군(이선)이 1880년 13세의 나이에 병을 얻어 죽자 국장을 치르기 위해 만든 왕실상여로, 당시 완화군의 스승인 김병년이 하사받아 태안 안면도로 가져와 현재에 이르고 있다.

길이 2.2m, 폭 1m, 높이 1.5m로, 청룡과 황룡의 얼굴을 조각한 용수판과 봉황의 얼굴을 표현한 봉두, 용의 머리를 조각한 용두 등 목조각품이 정교하고 화려해 전체적으로 고풍스런 느낌을 준다.

 
화려한 자태로 문화재적 가치를 인정받아 1990년에 충남도 문화재자료로 지정되기도 했으며, 군은 올해 전면적인 보존처리를 실시하고 ‘꼭두’를 복원해 상여의 옛모습을 복원하는 등 승언리 상여의 옛 모습을 되찾는 데 힘을 쏟았다.

 
특히, 상여에 장식된 나무조각상인 꼭두는 이승과 저승을 잇는 영적인 존재로 망자의 길동무 역할을 한다고 알려져 있으며, 일반적인 경우와 달리 저승사자가 해태를 타고 있는 특이한 모습으로 조각돼 관람객들의 눈길을 끌 것으로 보인다.

태안군은 승언리 상여의 조각적 아름다움을 강조할 수 있도록 전시실을 구성하고 누구나 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 설명 문안을 제공하는 등 승언리 상여의 문화재적 가치를 홍보하는 데 주력한다는 방침이다.
