[Chungcheongnam-do, ‘High Voltage Transmission Line-Cancer Occurrence’]

Amid the ongoing controversy over damage to residents' health due to high-voltage transmission towers and transmission lines, South Chungcheong Province has launched a large-scale investigation to determine the causal relationship.

The Chungnam Provincial Health and Environment Research Institute held a briefing session on the 10th at the conference room of the Chungnam Naepo Innovation Platform for the 'Environmental Epidemiologic Survey (1st Year) Research Service Due to the Impact of Transmission Lines in Thermal Power Plants'.

In South Chungcheong Province, coal-fired power plants account for half of the country, and concerns about damage to the health of residents continue to arise as transmission systems such as transmission towers and transmission lines are operated to transmit electricity.

There are also research results suggesting that exposure to magnetic fields in the ultra-low frequency band from high-voltage power lines has an effect on the occurrence of diseases such as leukemia, brain tumor, and breast cancer in children.

There is also a need to clearly identify the causal relationship between specific diseases occurring in the local residents near the high-voltage transmission lines of thermal power plants.

Based on this background, the research services promoted will be carried out for four years until 2025.

The total investment budget is KRW 2 billion, and it is carried out by the Korean Society for Environmental Health, which has conducted a ‘Humidifier Disinfectant Environmental Exposure Survey’.

Through this research service, the province will investigate △Electromagnetic wave characteristics generated by high-voltage lines, △Research on the epidemiologic effects of high-voltage line electromagnetic waves on the human body, △EMI protection exposure standards, and △Environmental impact range.

In the first year, which will be conducted until July next year, the health effects of exposure to electromagnetic waves from high-voltage transmission lines will be examined for residents of four cities, counties, and neighboring areas where thermal power plants are located.

Through this research service, the provincial government plans to comprehensively investigate and analyze the relationship between exposure to electromagnetic waves on transmission lines and health effects to find solutions to the long-standing controversy.

Yang Seung-jo, governor of Chungcheongnam-do, who attended the report said, "In the meantime, local residents have expressed their concerns about the health damage caused by high-voltage transmission lines and long-term exposure to electromagnetic waves in thermal power plants, and as the governor, he promised a thorough investigation." This is because energy is important, but what is most urgent and important as the governor of Chungcheongnam-do is the health and safety of residents.”
