[‘Seocheon Tidal Flat’ registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site]

The Seocheon Tidal Flat in Chungcheongnam-do (registration name: ‘Korea Tidal Flat’) was registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site.

The 44th World Heritage Committee, held on the 26th (Korean time), made the final decision to inscribe the tidal flats of Korea on the World Heritage list.

The tidal flats of Korea registered as a World Heritage Site include △Seocheon Tidal Flat (Seocheon, Chungcheongnam-do), △Gochang Tidal Flat (Gochang, Jeollabuk-do), △Sinan Tidal Flat (Cheonnam Shinan), and △Boseong-Suncheon Tidal Flat (Boseong, Suncheon, Jeollanam-do). It is a series of four heritage sites, spanning five local governments, and all of them are designated as wetland protected areas.

As a result, Korea has a total of 15 World Heritage Sites, including the tidal flats of Korea.

The World Heritage is divided into cultural heritage, natural heritage, and mixed heritage. This 'tidal flat of Korea' is the second World Natural Heritage listed in Korea in 14 years after 'Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tube', which was registered in 2007. .

Last May, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), a UNESCO advisory and review body, recognized the outstanding universal value of 'Korea's tidal flats' as 'important habitats for biodiversity conservation on the planet', but the heritage and buffer zones were A Defer opinion was presented on the grounds that it was not sufficient.

However, the World Heritage Committee evaluated, “Since ‘Korea’s tidal flats’ are of great value, ‘excellent universal value’ is recognized.”

The ‘tidal flats of Korea’ were inscribed on the Tentative List of World Heritage Sites in 2010.

The Cultural Heritage Administration submitted an application for World Heritage inscription to the World Heritage Center in January 2018, but in response to the World Heritage Center's review opinion that the map needs to be revised, the application was supplemented and submitted again in January 2019.
