[Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Council urges 'nature's kidney' to be registered as a World Heritage Site for Korean tidal flats]

The Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Assembly has raised one voice to urge Korea to register the tidal flats as a World Heritage Site.

The Chungnam Provincial Assembly announced on the 13th that it had adopted the 'recommendation for urging Korea's tidal flats to be listed as World Heritage Sites' at the first plenary session of the 330th Extraordinary Session.

The proposal is for the government to develop tidal flats centered on three regional groups in Chungnam, Jeollabuk-do and Jeollanam-do and five local governments: Seocheon (68㎢), Gochang (64㎢), Shinan (1,100㎢), Boseong, and Suncheon (59.85㎢) It was adopted to urge administrative and diplomatic efforts to be inscribed as a World Heritage Site.

Rep. Yang Geum-bong (Seocheon 2nd Democratic Party of Korea) initiated the initiative, and 39 lawmakers participated.

The government and the relevant metropolitan areas and local governments applied for registration of the Korean tidal flats as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in January 2019, but in June of this year, they were not listed due to the recommendation of the World Federation for Conservation of Nature, a UNESCO advisory body.

Assemblyman Yang said, “The status of a World Heritage site can be a lever to solve many problems that occur in natural warfare. In order to publicize it, the 44th World Heritage Committee, which will be held in China from the 16th of this month, needs to be registered as a World Heritage Site.”
He added, “Since tidal flats create and provide enormous wealth to the local community when they are replaced with natural capital and socioeconomic capital, our community should engage in sustainable conservation and utilization for future generations.” “The central government and three regional organizations “This is a time when unlimited cooperation between the five local governments is necessary.”

To express the strong will of the Republic of Korea, the provincial council plans to send proposals to nine places including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Cultural Heritage Administration, and the National Council of City and Provincial Councils.
