충남도의회 ‘문화가 살아있는 충남형 도시재생 연구모임’이 29일 충남형 도시재생 모델 수립을 위해 광주 양림동 펭귄마을을 현장 답사했다.

이날 답사에는 연구모임 소속 의원과 관계 공무원, 전문가 등 총 11명이 참석해 도시재생 우수 사례로 꼽히는 펭귄마을을 견학하고 충남도의 정책 추진 방향을 모색하는 시간을 가졌다.

펭귄마을은 거주하는 노인들의 불편한 걸음걸이가 펭귄을 닮았다 하여 붙여진 이름이다. 노인들만 남아 있을 정도로 쇠락했던 마을 골목길에 한 주민이 폐품을 활용한 정크아트를 만들어 장식해 이색적인 장소로 입소문을 탔다.

주민들도 고물 시계, 항아리 등 특색없는 물건을 모아 낡은 구도심 주택가를 하나의 거대한 전시장이자 예술장소로 변모시키면서 현재는 광주의 대표적 문화 관광지이자 공예특화거리로 거듭나고 있다.

연구모임 회원들은 양림동 문화기획가 이한호 강사로부터 ‘문화적 도시재생, 질문이 다르면 답이 달라진다’는 주제로 특강을 듣고 펭귄마을을 둘러보며 충남의 도시재생 정책이 나아가야 할 방향에 대해 심도있는 대화를 나눴다.
