충남대학교가 청각장애 학생들의 학습권을 보장하고 장애 없는 ‘무장애(Barrier-Free)’ 캠퍼스를 조성하기 위해 교내에 맞춤형 음향 지원 시설을 구축했다.

충남대 장애학생지원센터는 청각 보조기기 전문기업 허브티(Hub.T)의 기술 지원을 받아 센터 내 상담실과 다목적실에 ‘텔레코일존(Telecoil Zone)’ 조성을 완료했다고 밝혔다. 텔레코일존은 자기장 유도 방식을 활용해 강연자나 상담자의 음성 신호를 보청기 및 인공달팽이관의 ‘T모드(텔레코일)’로 직접 전달하는 기술이다.

이번 시스템 도입으로 주변 소음이나 공간적 음향 한계가 획기적으로 개선되어 청각장애 학생들이 교육·상담 프로그램 참여 시 한층 선명하고 또렷하게 음성을 들을 수 있게 됐다. 충남대는 이용 빈도가 높고 원활한 의사소통이 필수적인 상담실과 다목적실을 우선 설치 장소로 지정했다.

대학 측은 새 학기를 맞아 조성된 이번 무장애 환경이 청각장애 학생들의 학습 집중도를 높이고 대학 생활 적응을 돕는 데 실질적인 마중물이 될 것으로 기대하고 있다.

서경산 충남대 장애학생지원센터장은 “전문기업의 소중한 기술 지원 덕분에 청각장애 학생들에게 꼭 필요한 교육 환경을 제공하게 됐다”며 “학생들이 소통의 장벽 없이 학업과 대학 생활에 온전히 몰입할 수 있도록 다각적인 지원을 이어가겠다”고 말했다.

충남대는 이번 텔레코일존 운영을 통해 학생들의 피드백과 만족도를 정밀히 분석한 뒤, 교내 주요 시설을 중심으로 확대 설치를 검토할 방침이다.
