Korea Mint Corporation to Provide Up to 200 Million Won in Support Per Company for ‘K-Brand Government Certification’ to Catch Overseas Counterfeits
Utilizing National Certification Trademarks Filed and Registered in 73 Countries… Establishing Monitoring and Joint Government Response System
The Korea Mint Corporation has begun recruiting companies for the ‘K-Brand Government Certification System’ to block K-brand counterfeit goods rampant in overseas markets and to protect the intellectual property rights of domestic companies. The deadline for the first round of applications is September 11.
The ‘K-Brand Government Certification System’ is a project in which the government files and registers national certification trademarks guaranteeing that a product is of the Republic of Korea in 73 countries worldwide, and applies these to the products of participating companies to prevent damage from counterfeit goods in advance. Consumers can scan the authenticity verification technology applied to the trademark using a mobile phone camera to instantly verify on-site whether a product is counterfeit.
This project goes beyond simply providing trademarks and offers exceptional support for the costs of introducing authenticity verification technology. With a total budget of 3 billion won, it supports 50% of the implementation costs (up to 200 million won per company) for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and mid-sized companies. As payments are made sequentially until the budget is exhausted, the program may close early.
In addition, the Korea Mint Corporation and the government will monitor suspected counterfeit goods in real-time based on authenticity verification data and share information on damages. If actual intellectual property infringement is confirmed, the Overseas IP Center and relevant ministries will join forces to launch a strong joint response to prevent the spread of counterfeit goods at an early stage.
Sung Chang-hoon, President of the Korea Mint Corporation, emphasized, “As the status of K-brands has risen, the damage to our companies caused by overseas counterfeit goods is also becoming serious.” He added, “We will spare no support in applying authenticity verification technology and strengthening counter-counterfeiting capabilities so that companies can enter overseas markets with peace of mind.”
Companies wishing to participate in the program can check the announcement details and apply through the Intellectual Property Portal or the Korea Intellectual Property Protection Agency website.
