[Column] Transforming the Great Chancellor Kim Jong-seo History Park into a ‘World Hero History Park’
Kim Yu-sin and Gye-baek, who met at Hwangsanbeol 1,500 years ago.
Kim Jong-seo, the great chancellor who pioneered the borders in the northern regions of Joseon.
And Yi Sun-sin, who defended the seas of the Republic of Korea.
We call them all ‘heroes.’
However, behind the name ‘hero’ lie different histories, nations, eras, and values.
Some fought against invasion, some defended the country, and some pioneered borders.
Then, how should we remember their history in the 21st century?
I believe the answer can be found in Janggun-myeon, Sejong City.
It is to reinterpret ‘heroes of war’ as ‘heroes of peace.’
Let’s gather the heroes of the world in Sejong City!
I propose a plan to develop the Great Chancellor Kim Jong-seo History Park in Daegyo-ri, Janggun-myeon, Sejong City, into a world-class historical and cultural space.
It is tentatively named the “World Hero History Park.” The method is not difficult.
It involves making a proposal to countries around the world each year, centering on the period commemorating Kim Jong-seo, the renowned statesman who pioneered the northern territories.
“Please send one hero whom your country respects to Sejong.”
Receiving donations of statues or sculptures would also be a viable option.
Of course, not just any hero should be accepted.
We must establish clear criteria, excluding historical aggressors who invaded the Korean Peninsula or dictators, and selecting figures who protect the nation and its people, and who symbolize the values of history and peace.
Then, each country would send one of its own historical heroes to Sejong City.
Imagining planting the world’s ‘cultural territories’ in Sejong City:
A hero from Central Asia standing in Sejong City,
A hero from Europe standing in Sejong City,
An independence hero from South America standing in Sejong City,
Historical figures from various Asian countries standing in Sejong City.
At that moment, the history and culture of nations around the world would converge in a single space within Sejong City. Each statue is not merely a simple sculpture.
It becomes a cultural and diplomatic asset symbolizing the nation's history and the memory of its people.
And citizens of the country that donated the statue will visit Sejong City.
Students will come, historians will come,
tourists will come,
cultural and artistic figures will come, and
diplomats will come.
Embassies, cultural institutions, universities, and tourism agencies from various countries can create programs.
Once this happens, the Kim Jong-seo History Park will no longer be just a small local history park.
It will become an international cultural platform where world history meets.
One country, one hero every year
This could be developed into a single international event.
Tentatively named "World Heroes' Day" or the "Sejong World Heroes Sculpture Festival."
Every year, one or two countries would be selected to introduce their historical heroes and receive donated sculptures. Along with the sculpture unveiling ceremony, we will host historical and traditional cultural performances by country, youth history education, international academic conferences, peace forums, cultural exchanges, and food and tourism festivals.
This will allow a new country to join Sejong every year.
In 10 years, it will be 10 countries; in 20 years, 20 countries.
In this way, Sejong will possess a World History and Culture Park that grows over time.
The most important principle is ‘peace.’
There is a principle that must be strictly adhered to here.
This place must not be turned into a space that glorifies militarism.
It must not be a park that displays ‘strong heroes,’
but rather a space where one encounters figures whom humanity must remember to move beyond war toward peace.
Therefore, criteria for historical evaluation are also necessary.
We must exclude figures who glorify invasion and massacre,
and select historical figures who defended their nation's independence, the lives of their people, and the country,
and figures who can be reinterpreted today as a message of peace and reconciliation. If we do so, the stories of Kim Yu-sin and Gye-baek will take on new significance.
While they fought each other 1,500 years ago, in the 21st century, they speak of peace together.
Why is Sejong possible?
Sejong is the administrative capital of the Republic of Korea.
Furthermore, in an area named "Janggun-myeon," lies the tomb of Grand Chancellor Kim Jong-seo, who pioneered the northern frontier.
This is a historical asset unique to Sejong that other cities cannot easily replicate.
If the symbols of South Korea's politics and administration—the Presidential Office and the National Assembly—are added to this, Sejong has a high probability of becoming a crucial space for national decision-making in the future.
In that case, administrative functions are not the only thing needed for Sejong City.
It also needs a reason for people from around the world to visit.
The World Heroes and Great Figures History Park could serve as one such reason.
It would begin with the renowned Chancellor Kim Jong-seo, continue through Kim Yu-sin and Gye-baek, pass through Yi Sun-sin, and expand to historical heroes from around the world.
Let's make the name of Janggun-myeon known to the world! Perhaps this can begin with a very small question.
“Where in South Korea is there a place named Janggun-myeon?”
And what if, upon visiting that place, you find:
The tomb of Kim Jong-seo, the hero of northern frontier expansion;
Sculptures honoring generals and heroes from around the world;
And an international peace, history, and culture festival held there every year?
That place would not stop at being a tourist destination.
It would become a city of international exchange through history.
I believe this is the way to give culture a new wing to the status of Sejong City as the administrative capital.
And here, the third story begins.
Going a step further than simply inviting heroes from around the world to Sejong City,
Could we not make nations and cities around the world engage in direct exchange with Sejong?
The answer lies precisely in Sejong’s alternative name as a hub for cultural diplomacy and international exchange.
